Will major make a difference?

I am applying as a transfer for next fall/spring and my major is speech/language pathology which is not offered at Brown. However it is a major that is not something you really study until masters so I can basically major in whatever I choose as long as it hits certain qualifications for my BA… and I am curious as to whether or not the major you choose effects your admittance rate? I have tried researching it and I haven’t come up with much for Brown, but at a lot of schools I have heard of certain majors accepting twice as many kids than others just to boost their numbers… is this something to consider while making my decision? And if so, what are the lower impact majors? Thanks!

It shouldn't really have any effect.

However, we don't offer classes that many SLP grad programs require you have credits in before you can attend, fwiw. We do have a neuroscience class on hearing and a couple of classes in linguistics and cognitive science, but I'm pretty sure you could not get the full compliment of courses necessary to go to grad school for SLP certification without taking time elsewhere to take those courses.

I could be mistaken, but to my understanding most of the slp masters programs have options where you can enter in any major and take extra classes (usually 1-2 semesters). I am not sure if this is an option I really want to avoid or not, but Brown is the only school I would take that route for..

Many of the programs basically will accept you on the conditional basis that you essentially complete what would be the muscle of an SLP concentration/major elsewhere in one or two semesters of additional undergraduate work, but not all.

If that's really what you want to do professionally, you may want to strongly consider the impact this will have on you. And I'm Brown's biggest supporter-- nearly all of my posts are on this board and have all been helping incoming students.

You may want to cover as much of that material as possible before transferring out of a school with that program.

Well I am currently at a community college, and so far have not been able to find a school that is "perfect for me" with slp. So I am in a bit of a rut... I really think that is what I want to do, but since I haven't even had the opportunity to dabble in some courses yet, I may find that it isn't what I expected, and so I am hesitant towards not applying, or even worse getting in and not going to, my absolute top choice just because they don't have that.. and I believe that if I were to go and figure out that it really is what I want and decide to pursue graduate studies in slp, I think that I would not mind taking the extra semesters..
