Will making a recording (musical instrument) help?

If their application has a section that is optional for sending in a musical talent CD then send one if you're good. If it doens't ask and you're not planning on studying it then I woudn't bother.

Alright, I'll tell you what I did......

If you truly want music to be one of your EC "hooks" send in a CD/tape to the music head department. For example, my ED school that I will be applying to, I went and visited their director of bands and I played my trumpet for him. Although, I have never had private lessons, I've been HIGHLY successful as a trumpet player. After I played for him, he admitted that he was impressed by my tone (He would not have known this if I just put it on paper and NOT sent in something or played in person.) He was so impressed that he said he would send a note down to admissions. By this being my ED school, I am SO GLAD that I went. I think it will increase my chances greatly.

I'm glad that you read my story. Now, if you're doing music in college, I'd advise you to contact the department head of whichever branch of music you will participate in. Introduce yourself, and perhaps get to know him/her.

On the other hand, if you do not plan to do music in college, then it wouldn't hurt to send in a tape/cd, but I'm not sure how much it'd help you much. If you put something like Band down as an EC, generally, it's a more self-explantory EC. It shows tons of dedication.

Anyway, I hope my advice/story helps :)

Anyone have any other input? BUMP

What if you were not planning on majoring in a music related field, but definitely knew that you wanted to play in the school's orchestra/chamber ensemble/band/etc.? Would sending a recording be beneficial? Could there be any downside to sending in a cd? Thank you in advance :)

I'm not majoring in a field of music. You have to get in contact with certain people though if you're seriously intrested as music being a "hook".

I know I definitely want to continue with my instrument. I've been playing for almost 9 years and have been very successful. Would it help to send one cd to the music department and one with your application? Or just one with the application and maybe include a note explaining that you're not interested in a music major, but think you can contribute to the music department through other means?

Really quickly guys, what are sum good schools to apply to with a Decent GPA and a 30 ACT(i know that doesn't really matter as much with music, but it can't hurt i'm sure). Music experience of about yrs. Can play Bassoon, flute, Piccolo, and piano... what are soom ood reach schools, level schools, and Safety schools. I appreciate this, and i understand it's hard to guage Reach or safety or level b/c it's all about the audition.... but i ask that that you bear with me...
Thank you

It wouldn't hurt to contact the music department and let them know who you are and that you're sending something in and if they'd be intrested in hearing you. You can do this like right now before the applying frenzy begins. What colleges are you looking at?

Zumy.....What region of the US are you looking in? If you're looking for a good marching band in the South, Vanderbilt would be great. If you're looking for something local, as I see you're from Illinois, Northwestern has a great band I've heard.

Thanks for all your input :) . Right now I'm looking into Barnard College as my first choice.
