Will Mid-Year Report Have Much Impact?

Hey CC. I am a very nervous college senior. I have applied to some of the top schools in the country (JHU, CMU, William and Mary, Brown, Princeton, UVA, Wake Forest) and I am worried that my Mid-Year Report will negetively impact my chances of admission. Through junior year, I maintained a 4.0 (UW) and 4.33 (W) GPA, taking many AP and Honors courses. I also got a 2260 on my SAT I, a 750 on Bio M, and straight 5's on my AP tests in my junior year. However, I am taking an especially rigourous courseload this year (6 AP credits and 2 honors courses), and that, coupled with senioritis, has caused a slight dip in my GPA (I'm getting a B in Calc for the semester, and got a couple of B's in AP Chem, although my average for the semester is still a 91). If I've calculated correctly, I'll have about a 3.96-3.97 after this semester. Hopefully, I will still maintain my "salutatorian" status. Many of my teachers and my counselor have told me not to worry, because Mid-Year Reports are used mainly to make decisions on "borderline" candidates, and my stats were above average for most of my schools. Still, I'm worried that they'll see this as a bad sign and reconsider me, especially at the Ivies. What are your opinions? Please be honest, but not harsh. I'm already a nervous wreck! Can any of you speak from personal experience-- did you get B's in your senior year? Thank you for any input.

**high school senior I assume.

I went to my counselor the other day to talk about a sort of similar issue, i.e. a downward trend of a few points during senior 1st semester in IB HL Physics and how that would me for college. What she said is that as long as your grades are in the same range as your junior grades (which are the most important) and you are still on track academically (i.e. you didn’t slack off) then you will be fine.

Also, 0.03-0.04 is just semantics. Adcoms are not demonic individuals, and I would say you are definitely on track to go to a really good school.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, that was a silly typo haha. I am senior in high school.
What you said is very reassuring to hear, thank you. My grades are definitely within the same range-- I mean, I still have more A’s than B’s, but the thing is I’ve NEVER gotten a B before this year. I just don’t want them to think that I’m slacking off.
But I certainly hope you’re right that I’ll get into a fantastic school, and good luck with your own admissions!

Anyone else? :)

10 char bump

10 char bump

Seriously, some perspective would be really helpful. :)

I’m kinda in the same boat. I don’t know how, but I’ve basically gotten mostly As with a few lower grades, and this semester I might get a few B+/A-s. I’m freaking out a little bit, but the classes are hard, so I’m going to assume its not a big deal. As long as your previous grades didn’t raise a red flag, you just want these grades to be along the same lines.

Same here. All A’s, then two B’s on my mid-year report:(

On the bright side, Junior year grades are the most important.

YES. That’s what I’ve been hearing-- junior year is what really matters, which is super reassuring, because I took 4 AP credits in my junior year with all A’s and 5’s on my tests. Good luck to both of you as well.

10char bump

Cheer up… I’m sure you’re fine.

I definitely need to worry though… I went from a 7 to a 5 in my prospective major (economics). (IB grades. 7 = A; 5 = C?)

@kameronsmith - I think a 5 is about a B/B+, it doesn’t go straight down likethat.
