For geography majors who are familar with GIS and the employment opportunities in this field, do you think that a minor in Geography will be enough for me to find a position as a GIS analyst? I'm really interested in GIS but unfortunately, it's my junior year and I can't really afford to spent two more years in school to complete the GIS-Geography major. But I can complete a minor. Also, what steps would you suggest that I take to make my resume more appealing to potiential employers? I've been searching alot of GIS job sites, and I see that most positions require a BS in Computer Science or Geography.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Most definately! I got an internship in GIS with just one class and would have been hired on full-time if I hadn't gone off to grad school (I'm a geologist). In many areas, companies are having a really hard time finding people to fill positions for GIS-related careers. At my internship, there was a variety of people with degrees ranging from many with AS in CAD to BA/BS in geography, geology, math, etc. Most companies will have their own system (outside of ArcGis or the likes) and need to train those in their systems anyway.

Thanks alot for the information. I am a Pan African Studies major, and I was planning to minor in Economics and Geography and Possibly Political Science. I am thinking about taking courses specifically in GIS Software Development and other GIS-related courses.

After much consideration and speaking to professors and advisors in the Geography department, I've decided to declare a major in Geography-GIS and stick with it. Thanks for the advice.
