Will my ACT sink my battleship?

I was only able to take the ACT once and was not able to retake…that being said my score was 30. 27E 32M, 34R, 27S. I am applying to a lot of really good schools like Brown, Rice, etc. with 25th percentile around 30-31 for economics and environmental studies. I applied ED to Duke and was deferred, though I don’t really know what that means in context of these almost equally competitive schools I am applying RD to. I have rank 1 and great ECs,and I’m pretty sure my top one is very unique, though they are almost all localized.
I’m not really asking for specific school chances…but I want to know is will these scores would it take nothing short of a miracle as an unhooked white male who hasn’t won any big state awards or are there actually enough spots available to where if I apply to enough of these schools with 30-31 25th percentile schools that one of them might have room for me?
Also do my sub-section scores matter or only composite for the ACT? Like will my 34 in reading help me a lot less than my 27 in English will hurt me?
Thanks.

Hi there, a 30 on your ACT score doesn’t help however it shouldn’t hurt your chances drastically. However I do think that having a 27 in English may hurt just a little bit since that is quite a low score for the schools that you are applying too.

At this point you have nothing to lose, don’t fret about the test scores rock your essays and hope for the best!

You are rowing upstream with that score at those schools, even with what I assume is a pretty solid academic record.
Unhooked applicants really need to be over the 25/75 midpoint to have a decent shot.
