I got into UIUC for Mechanical Engineering in February, and I even got into the James Scholar Honors Program. I live in India, but I’m a US citizen, so I’m considered OOS. I did pretty bad in my final exams. I’m in the AP/Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (A state board). In this board, only the marks of the final exams at the end of each year count towards your final grade. In 11th grade, I scored:
French - 95/100
English - 92/100
Math 1A - 70/75
Math 2A - 70/75
Physics - 53/60
Chemistry - 47/60
That’s a 427/470 (90.85%)
The rigor of the Math, Physics, and Chemistry courses is about the same as that of an AP course. French is mostly the basics, and English is not at a high level. Those are my 11th grade marks. I got my 12th grade marks today. They are:
French - 91/100 (4 marks less)
English - 85/100 (7 marks less)
Math 2A - 47/75 (23 marks less)
Math 2B - 38/75 (32 marks less)
Physics - 43/60 (10 marks less)
Chemistry - 34/60 (13 marks less)
Physics Practical - 28/30
Chemistry Practical 28/30
That’s a 394/530 (74.34%)
Pass marks are 26 in each Math paper, 21 in Phy and Chem, and 35 in Eng and French. So I didn’t fail anything. I didn’t barely pass anything either, except Math 2B and Chem maybe (Passed by 12 marks and 13 marks, respectively).
Overall, that’s 821/1000, which is 82.1%. I know I did bad, but I honestly wasn’t expecting these marks. I was expecting around 857. The AP board is notorious for bad evaluations, but UIUC doesn’t know that, so I can forget saying that. Do I have a chance of getting rescinded? Above 75% out of 1000 is an A, that will show on my transcript, but there’s no other grades. Only the marks show on the transcripts, and an overall A, no percentages. I honestly have no excuse for my marks. I was lazy, and I didn’t study that hard this time around. I only did good in Eng, French, Phy Practical, and Chem Practical. Math went down significantly. So did Chemistry. The only engineering-related subjects I did good in were Phy and Chem Practicals, and Phy I did okay. So will I get rescinded? Sorry for the long post. P.S. I got a 9.8 GPA in 9th grade and 10th grade, when I was in CBSE, if that helps at all. Please give me your opinion in general, even if you don’t know much about the Indian education system.
Being an international with a different grading system I really doubt anyone on this board can help you. You’ll need to contact UIUC (or have your GC do so).
@“Erin’s Dad” You’re pretty much right, and I did want to email UIUC. However, I don’t think students are encouraged to tell admission counselors their grades before sending the final transcripts and ask if they’ll get rescinded. And I doubt they could give me an honest opinion, since this grading system is relatively obscure even in India.
Bump
Have your guidance counselor explain that tou passed all your classes, maybe even have her explain your %tile within your school (obviously not rescind worthy if you were in the top 15% of your class etc).
@theanaconda Haha, my high school is very inexperienced in the U.S. college admissions process. In fact, there is no guidance counselor. And my high school doesn’t calculate percentile, though they might if I asked them to for me. The transcript comes from the AP/Telangana Board of Intermediate Education. It doesn’t come from my school, though my school is the one that’s going to send it to UIUC.
I am an indian. (CBSE)
As long as you have an overall of 70% it is highly unlikely that your admission offer will be rescinded.
Well, at least in CBSE.
In your case, however, since you do not have any mid-term marks sent to UIUC, this might be an issue. Especially, and only, in Math.
I’d say if possible send your mid-term grades along too.
However, just super low marks in one subject cannot get your offer rescinded, I believe.
All other marks should not cause a problem.
Good Luck!
