I am a Transfer student who recently got admitted into UCLA as a Molecular, Cell, Developmental Bio major. My overall GPA is 3.7 and I finish all the lower division Biology and all the chemistry requirement. The only thing that I won’t finish is Physics (Strongly recommended). I was in physics this semester but due to a family emergency I dropped it and received a W. I report an academic change and tell them that I drop my physics. Yesterday, I received an E-mail ask me to submit my grade for my other classes once I receive them. Other than physics I am currently taking Biochem, English, and Calc 2. The problem is I won’t receive my official grade until early June and I am really worry that my admission decision will get rescind. This is my current standing in my classes, Biochem 92%, Calc 91.88%, English 96%. How likely is my admission will get rescind? should I start consider other schools now? They take down the Congratulation page… I am stressing out…
You need to call UCLA and see what you can do.
I already contact them but they just told me that they can’t make their decision without knowing my final grade in the class… I read my contract again and it did not specify anything about physics, however, it did say i need to pass my English class and maintain my academic standing… I am pretty sure I can get an A in my Biochem and English also at least a B in my Math class. I don’t know what they mean to maintain my academic standing … Is a W consider a bad academic standing ??
@Ohm888 Thx for replying my post…
Maintain academic standing is purposely vague. They don’t want to see significant drops in GPA where it’s obvious the student thought they could ignore academics once they were accepted, but my understanding is that even one or two C grades won’t get you rescinded. More than 2 Cs, a D or F and you’d be in trouble. You’ve finished all of your required courses, physics wasn’t required, and you notified them that you dropped it. Now they just need to see the rest of your grades which appear to be all As or possibly one B. As long as dropping physics doesn’t drop you below the # of units required for transfer students, my guess is that you’ll be just fine.
@1Dreamer Thank you so much for replying my post!! I feel the same way too… but when i see a sign of uncertainty I just freak out… I read many posts also look up the information online and it seems like I have to majorly screw up on my finals to get myself rescind… So as long as I maintain my GPA I can be a Bruin right? I really appreciate your help!!!
Right. Keep in mind that schools go through a lot of work to choose the students they want to be part of the incoming class. They aren’t actively looking for reasons to drop accepted students so they can go to the wait-lists. If they accepted you, they want you. They do have certain requirements which they outline in the contract, but you haven’t described anything that I see as a red flag.
Congrats on your acceptance!
They’re going to ask why did you end up dropping a “Strong Recommended” course rather than your other courses? They might suspect that this was a course you were struggling with and decided to drop because you may’ve had too much on your plate and decided to drop the W rather than get a poor grade. The “family emergency” is something they have heard thousands of times. They could ask you what it was and you might need to show documentation, i.e. death certificate, hospital records or etc. Just be prepared.
