Will my circumstances help me?

I'm interested in attending Whitman college because I plan on living in Washington after I graduate. I was wondering if my circumstances would increase my chances

I live in south Georgia
First gen college student
African American male
Will apply for need based aid

any responses will be helpful

I have no inside info, but your circumstances should help. Whitman has been actively seeking to increase the racial and geographic diversity of its student body, and these efforts are showing results, as I believe Whitman’s last few enrolled classes have been its most diverse ever. Of course, diversity alone won’t get you in - you still need good grades and test scores - but the diversity you could bring to campus should weigh in your favor. Good luck!

applegiant: true, Whitman has made great strides in attracting more diversity to campus. Princeton Review ranked it #14 this year in its list of schools with most racial/class interaction. You being from across the country, first generation and an African American male will get their attention for sure. They will also want to see that you are up to the rigorous workload and are positively involved in your high school or community. Best of luck!
