Will My Criminal Record Effect Me?

Another hurdle I have to overcome is my criminal record. (Possession of an Offensive weapon (farb gel)..Possession of a sec.5 Firearm (pepper spray ordered from us..I thought it was legal here lol....eh criminal damage when I was 13..)

I have 2 questions

1) Does this mean my chances of a visa are ruined?

2) Does this mean my chances of getting into college are ruined?

Note : I have excellent grades..good family professions (father doctor mum teacher)..Lots of extra curricular..play sports ect ect

Also do I even have to inform the college I have a criminal record?

Somebody should correct me, but I dont think its goes into your permanent record if you did something like carrying a pepper spray when you were 13…

Colleges are reasonable. You do have to inform them of any criminal record, but most applications have a section where you are able to explain the circumstances - and the circumstances of your “criminal activity” don’t seem severe at all.

However, getting a visa is a different matter.

It depends on which type of Visa you are trying to get and on the ability to able to prove your intent. If you know what you are doing then getting the Visa isnt impossible.

eh, I’m not sure about UK laws but was it expunged from your record? I know in the USA, you can usually do some community service and it will get taken off. Expunged records don’t have to be revealed to adcom or for visa purposes.

damn…at age 13???

I don’t know how it will affect your visa application. You should call the nearest consulate and ask.

As far as informing schools, it depends on whether they ask. You may want to google “gina grant”.

you’re screwed lol

Hey I have far worse on my record!! I don’t know about your visa but I managed to get accepted into a pretty good college (CU Boulder)

dude i honestly dont believe that the school needs to be informed, anything thats not a felony gets expunged when you turn 18 here at least.

I think you’re fine. Even though they ARE “offenses” technically, they don’t sound too bad and even if the college finds out about then, I’d say it’s not too big of a deal. Don’t know about the visa situation though…

He’s british, therefore he is fine.

I don’t know that the school will care, but the US government might. You need to get it checked out because generally speaking those with a criminal record are automatically denied entry and require additional exemptions to be considered. There was a British actor that was recently denied entry to the US for some stuff on his record from when he was younger, so you need to get this checked out to avoid potential problems later. If a speeding ticket popped up they wouldn’t care, but firearms and weapons offenses don’t sound like something they’d just gloss over…

I’d hardly consider farb gel and pepper spray “firearms”. Did you spray someone with them? I am doubting that you did since you didn’t list assault as one of your charges, unless it was self defense or something.

farb gel spray is 100% legal in the UK. Section 5(1)(b) of the Firearms Act 1968 prohibits any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid or gas. Because farb gel spray does not contain any substances and the can itself is not designed to discharge a noxious substance, it is not prohibited by the Firearms Act.
