Will my friend's quarter grades kill him for NYU Stern?

Hey! I am chancing a nervious friend right now for NYU Stern, and he is a Senior looking to apply RD to NYU Stern. He had problems a few quarters and with a couple of AP's and he just wants to know if he wil get rejected because of his not-so-average grades. He is really worried and a nervious wreck, so I am helping him out for Stern. I always try helping him with his attitude and tell him that I got into NYU Stern with bad quarter grades, but he needs more reassurance.........so here are his grades: Thanks

Do you think his quarter grades will kill him for NYU Stern? He is really going crazy, and I had quarter grades like him and I got accepted into NYU Stern, except, I applied ED to Stern! Thank you! His cumulative average for High School is 90.13% and he has very good unique extra curriculars, BUT PLEASE just tell me if his grades are good enough, don't tell me it depends on EC's, because we are all in the same clubs and I got accepted, so I know his EC's are good enough and his recommendations are better than mine, and I, once again, was accepted ED, what do you think his chances are? Thanks!

I got a C+, then a B my sophomore year as well, and I got into Stern. Honestly, I’d say because he showed improvement, and has been getting very solid grades since, he’ll be fine.

Thank you very much, I got into Stern, and my friend still doesn’t believe in himself, and he does need to! What about AP European History, I forgot to tell you his (very good in my opinion) AP Score for Euro, well he got a 1, but he had a horrible teacher! Do you think Stern will reject him because of his 1 on AP European? He is a hard worker!

PLEASEEEEE everyone try and comment! He is breaking down!

Tell him to chill out. Worrying and being anxious will do nothing for him, whatever happens will happen. By the way, what does the 90 GPA translate to in the 4.0 spectrum? (Also, it’s easier to get into Stern ED than RD.)

Quarter grades not that important. What is his GPA overall? That is what matters the most. I got into Gallatin with a 3.2 GPA. granted that Gallatin and Stern are very different but tell him not to be that hard on himself. if they count anything its junior year grades which, based on what ive seen, are very solid. far better than mine. A good essay and recs can make all the difference as well. Something very important is missing on that list. SAT or ACT. What is his score for that? As long as its 2100+ I’m pretty sure he has a very solid chance of getting in.

And by 1 do you mean a 1 on his AP test or as a grade? The only grading scale I’m familiar with is the 4.0 scale, so I have no idea. And anyway, he’s going to Stern, so Euro. history has nothing to do with his intended major. It doesn’t look great, but it’s not like he’s failing at his intended major.

Well, it translates to about a 3.6, but we do not have a 4.0 scale at our school, we only have a numerical scale 0-100, so yeah, he just has a 90 GPA basically. What do you think?

no no, he got a 1 on the AP European examination at the end, the AP test. He got like a 77 for the course final average.

with a 3.6 that’ll be a little difficult since stern is really competitive. he doesnt have to report his AP scores but if he wants the ones with 4’s and 5’s to count he has to send them in through the college board. standardized testing for SAT or ACT better be pretty good to counteract that GPA. because my ACT was a 31 or roughly a 2100 on the SAT.

D in an AP class put the rope around his neck.

i got a D in an AP class. AP English language and i still got in. keep in mind that was for only 1 quarter. my semester grade leveled out to a C or so.

Well, he has a 2160 SAT, and no, he did NOT get a D in AP European history he got a C+ final average, and honestly, he was just a sophmore, so I wouldn’t know why it would matter, AMGLeague? Could you clarify why you think that please? Oh and he has a 3.67 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

How did you find out his grades? Did he give you his transcripts or something? If these really are his grades at least he has an upward trend. Idk his SAT’s are good, but lets just put it this way the C+ isn’t going to help him.

if its in sophmore year its fine. as long as his semester grade isnt that bad he can get it. a 3.67 is roughly around the average GPA at NYU. a good SAT score to. he can get in just dont get below a C in any more classes and he should be fine. keep in mine that AP classes are difficult and colleges do take that into consideration.

Is it better to get a B in an AP/Honors class or an A in a regular class? The answer is always neither–it is better to get an A in an AP/Honors class. Sounds harsh, but it’s the truth.

well its true but i always think it is better with a B in an AP class compared to an A in a regular class. i actually like my AP courses so its not that big a deal anyway. (they dont offer honors comparative politics or economics). its not like i had much of a choice from the very beginning. take as many APs in the areas you enjoy. for me i enjoy the social studies/sciences so i took AP us government, comparative politics, world history, psychology, and economics. the only ones im missing is AP us history and european history. if thats your passion then taking AP courses is worth it.
