If your unweighted GPA is 3.71, then what’s your weighted GPA? Assuming it’s in the neighborhood of 4.0, you look very good. It depends on what kind of person you are and what they’re looking for in this particular class.

GPA is extremely subjective. Class rank puts your GPA into perspective. SAT’s put your class rank into perspective. So you have no ranks, no percentile, decile, quintile?

Well how can you compare with other applicants? What if your school has major grade inflation? How can GPA account for that? Only class rank will show whether a 4.0 gpa is hard to get for your particular school. And to see if your school is competitive, you use the national SAT/ACT to compare between schools.

That’s why it’s good for a HS to have a relationship with a college – the college knows what’s what at the HS.

My point was that one can be the validictorian somewhere, but if the class is extremely weak it’s less of an accomplishment than if one is ranked, say, only 10th, but in an extremely strong class. Yes, the national standardized tests sort of smooths everything, since everyone takes the same test.

I do think that the AdComms at most schools can cut through all of this and see beyond the GPA, by getting teacher and GC recs. Remember that they’re looking at you in your entirety, not just your grades and scores.
