Will my social life be nonexistent?!?!

I'm hoping to double major in BME and Econ. I know The BME major is notorious for sucking the life out of its students.. BUT how bad is it really? Will I have time to chillax and pursue off campus interests w/out worrying about complete failure?

I was a BME and Econ double major. While the BME major is certainly rigorous, it definitely does not suck the life out of anyone. A lot of time is required for problem sets and lab assignments, but as long as you have decent time management, you can balance your schoolwork with other activities. BME students, in my experience, tend to be very involved in other non-BME related activities, whether it’s other clubs, second majors/minors or off-campus activities. On top of my coursework and research, I was a member of the campus EMS squad for all four years at Hopkins, and ran the annual model UN Conference for high school students; one of my classmates volunteered doing forensic interviews for the state and also taught sex-ed at a juvenile facility (along with a Spanish double major); another played in the Peabody orchestra; another was an avid outdoor enthusiast and used to go on frequent trips with Outdoor Pursuits; etc. BME students tend to be very motivated to get involved in things and do a good job balancing their time so that they are able to do what they enjoy without their grades suffering

Hope that helps!

So you’re basically superman?

I agree with tanman… Several of my friends are BME. They do have a large amount of work, but they usually have time to relax. However, there will be a few weeks where you will have to work straight through a weekend. Be prepared for those, but don’t be scared. It’s not as life-sucking as people think.

In fact I know a BME Applied Math Double Major. Sure, he’s extremely busy during the week, but he usually has time to go out at least once a week and he’s in a frat
