For my first year of college I was at UC Davis but I decided that I didn't like the experience and I wasn't doing as well as I had hoped. So, after the school year ended, I withdrew from the UC and then began to take courses at my local cc in hopes of a transfer to another school. My main question is whether or not having the one year from UC Davis will negatively impact, or perhaps even kill, my chances for a transfer to another school. And, if anyone knows, how will my GPA be calculated for transfer / post-admission? And, as I got a D in a course at Davis, will retaking it at my cc fix that portion of my GPA up or is that a lost cause?

I ask this because my case is a rare one and there's startlingly little information about it, so I was hoping that it might be cleared up here. I've spoken to counselors but I'm still fairly hazy on the details of all this.

As I understand it, you can only have a grade of D or F replaced by taking the exact same course at the college or university where you received it. So, the only way to replace the D would be to go back to UC Davis, take the exact same course again and get a C or better in it. The problem with that is that in order to be considered a CCC transfer and get transfer priority to a UC, your final 30 semester hours must be taken at a CCC and none can be taken at a four year institution. Therefore, even taking one class at UC Davis will wipe out whatever CCC credits you have completed to date and you will have to start all over again earning 30 semester hours at a CCC only before you can transfer to a UC.

Well, that’s an unfortunate situation. So basically I just have to live with the poor grade and just work harder in order to raise my GPA up? But let’s say I take the equivalent course at my community college (which apparently has a course that transfers over) and get a good grade in it, will it just be counted as a separate class? So there wouldn’t actually be any real point in taking it then, right? And, one more thing, since I’ll be counted as a CC student as far as transfers go, will the Davis GPA still be counted if I get into another school?

And as for why I didn’t like Davis, I guess it’s just that the small-town feel didn’t really appeal to me. There are a few reasons, but that’s probably the biggest one.

I remember that if you took a certain amount of units at a university, it will be counted towards your GPA and UC’s will consider you a UC transfer. Chances are, since you were already accepted into a UC and have done poorly, UC Admins might look down upon your application. I would attempt to do TAG and just maintain/keep your gpa above a 3. You can get into many UC’s like SD and SB that aren’t as small and more fun.
