ranked 10th currently at a pub school, but it will probably get better
Would i be considered african american?
And also what will officers think or do when they notice i just turned 17 last month?
In nigeria, schools starts much earlier, so when i came here, i was put back 3 grades, and i was still too young for the grade.

um i dont think u qualify as a URM, since u were born in nigeria, which is Africa, but ur not the URM from the U.S.

I am not so sure BBall. Can't Green Card holders be considered URMs? I have never looked into that.

Biceps, you need to check with the universities' admissions offices. Are you now a Junior or a Senior? Your grades and class rank are good...see if you can improve your ACT/SAT a little.

Can someone please tell me what URM is? I've heard that term used a lot in these forums but I still have no clue what it stands for.

underrepresented minority

It seems like u MAY get in but you dont have many AP's...so the question would be...could u last?

i guess i regret choosing a less rigorous schedule now. Right now i could also be taking ap stats, ap english, and ap european history in addition to psy, calc, and bio which are what i'm taking now

There are just too many urms with higher scores and harder course loads. I'd look a tier below the ivies in your shoes.

i guess being a black male doesnt count for much contrary to what i was told

You will be evaluated at any school according to the oppoetunities given to you. At selective schools there is an expectation that you have taken the most rigerous cirriculum your school offers and you have done well. Since you state that you have not done so it will be a ding against you.

I also agree with suze, that blacks are bringing better games to the table so you will be knocked out of the box. It is not that being a black male does not count, but you still have to bring comprable grades and scores. the 4.2 gpa is all relative and taken in context of your school's scoring system. a 4.2 on a 5 point scale is going to be viewed differently from a 4.2 on a 4.5 scale. In addition the school is going to look at how much weight is given (in order to assess the amount of grade inflation).

D has friends who are black makes at Dartmouth who scored 35-36 on the act.

i guess 3 aps this year isnt rigorous enough

Of course being black helps, but you sound like you feel entitled to an ivy admit. Why? Sounds like you go to a school with lots of APs and therefore much more than most American blacks have. If you're middle class and go to a strong school, do you really think you deserve an ivy with a 29 ACT?

Don't depend on URM status to get your foot in the door. People with that status think that they don't have to try as hard and they will get in, but it's if they are working as hard as anyone else that they might get the "tipping" factor in admissions. Note I called it a "tipping factor," because it's not as if your application is suddenly on a higher pedestal when it contains a check in the hispanic/african american box.

3 APs is really not that rigorous, compared to students who are aiming for ivies. I would say around 5 APs is the norm, at least, it was that way at my school. A lot of African American students in my graduating class were phenomenal students, with stats that were as competitive as they could get. While one made it into Brown, most of them didn't get the Ivy that they had hoped for. So URMs are bringing more and more to the table, as suze mentioned.

30 on ACT is said to be risky for Ivies...

my friend from last year got into UPenn ED with a 1310 after 3 times, white, no URM or special hooks, just vp of the class and of model congress.

Would I be considered a urm if I was born in China and only have a green card?

No. Asians (or Asian-Americans) are generally not considered URMs.

Asians are ORMs (overrepresented minorities). That means you will not be given URM benefits.
