Will not having a real leadership position hurt my chances at Wharton?

Yeh, I really don’t have any leadership positions in my extracurricular activities at school. It’s really big, almost 700 ppl in a grade I think, so running for any type of president or whatever is pretty competitive and hard. Also, I don’t have any sort of business-type extra-curricular either, unless you count my landscaping gig, where I got paid to mow neighbors’ lawns, water gardens, plow snow, etc. Or jobs. I do have pretty good grades, test scores, and decent amount of ECs though. I know some people exaggerate their “resume,” but after reading some of the posters’ ECs, I’m kind of discouraged.

For example, here’s one person’s post:

“bank of america (summer 2004): learned about fx trading and reducing the risk”
“sk research institue of management(summer 2005): learned about basic economics”
“hold a patent (pertaining to e-business) <became an=”" international="" patent="" last="" yr=""> both my name and my dad’s name is under inventors’ name- needed my dad’s help because the patent is something about faciliatating and increasing the profit and credibility of both the purchaser and the seller (required some knowledge in business)"</became>

I’m not hating on people, but everyone applying to Wharton seems to be the next Bill Gates or Donald Trump. I actually tried to have fun in high school. Has it gotten to the point that “having a life” in high school actually puts you at a disadvantage in college admissions. Alright, w/e, I’m gonna stop my b*tchin. Once again, no offense to anyone. I guess I’m just bitter and not too thrilled about my chances at my dream school.

Wharton isn't filled with future Trumps. However, I would say that very very few people have NEVER held a leadership position. It doesn't have to be in school, it can be in a youth/church group, summer camp, job, etc. Oh and you don't need to have business ECs.

If Wharton is your dream school, I would say to apply ED. If you apply RD with no leadership I would think that the competition would be way too tough. Make sure that you communicate why Wharton and business and Penn are your first choices. And don't make excuses for why you don't have leadership positions. Nobody wants to hear excuses.

Also, got a quick question about applyin early to huntsman. If you apply early and get deferred, do they still consider your application to the single degree school as early decision, or does that get deferred to regular decision too?

i believe the answer is yes because when I applied to huntsman ED i got into Wharton ED but they deferred my huntsman decision to RD. So I was in but not sure if i was in huntsman.

thank you bern

umm i believe wharton really stresses the leadership aspect. and no you don't need business ECs.
(i got in w/ substantial leadership but no real business classes or ECs... and i'm pretty sure i won't be the next trump)

not to discourage you too much, but if you don't have any leadership by now (are you a junior?) that won't look too good

.... i don't advocate backdooring into wharton, but you could (if you really really love penn by itself) just apply to the college and take some wharton classes or something

I don't know how they're gonna look at my "leadership" positions. They're really not at school. I'm asian, so I did a lot of volunteering at my local Chinese school. I first worked as a tutor and camp counselor during summer of 9th and 10th grade. Then I worked as sort of a "Student Representative" at monthly committee and board meetings and was also editor of a student-run newspaper. This year I was the Principal's assistant and advisor on student issues. I don't know if these things qualify as good leadership credentials though. I was just hoping it would help me in applying to Huntsman.

njchino - with regards to that huntsman question, i don't know if it is uniform. that is, i think some people might get deferred to huntsman and others who are less qualified for huntsman will get deferred to their default selection. not sure though. i would ask admissions that.
