Will not taking AP Lit hurt my chances?

Instead of taking AP Lit I would take Honors English 12. I have taken honors English throughout high school. I was wondering if it would hurt me since I've never did an AP English course. I want to go to GWU, American, or Georgetown. I know that these schools are competitive. Will having the AP Lit really help my chances? I'm afraid the class might be too much because the teacher is really tough. However, she teaches the Honor Class too and treats them similarly.
My junior schedule:
APUSH
Honors Accounting
AP French
Algebra 2
Honors English
Chemistry
Spanish 3

Senior Schedule:
AP Government
AP CompSci
PreCalc
Honors Spanish
AP Euro history
Physics
Honors English*

SAT: 1850
SAT 2: 800 in French, 650 in USH
Extra Curriculars: Varsity XC, JV Swimming, Varsity Lacrosse, President of French NHS, NHS member, French Club VP, Key Club, Newspaper.

So do you think I should take Honors or AP English senior year? I don't want to be overwhelmed because I am taking other APs too. But I also want to be competitive enough for my top colleges. The teacher treats her AP and Honors class similarly, but I'm still not sure what to do. Can you please give me some advice? Thanks!

If you could handle it I would recommend taking it. You will probably get into American without it. You are kind of borderline for GW so it would definitely help you there. Georgetown is a pretty big reach to begin with, but I would still apply anyway because you never know.

GW is my number 1 school. I understand that Georgetown is a big reach, but it can’t hurt to apply anyway. Thanks for the info.

For AP Lit…
I haven’t taken it yet, but I can tell you what I’ve heard from some of my friends.

Current senior taking it who got a 36 on the ACT, Full ride to LSU, 3 time member (as in, she started 10th grade) in the Florida State Academic team told me that AP Lit “sucks 11 dicks each day”. Most of the seniors at my school skip out of it by taking a similar literature class at a college nearby us. It’s not favored, but even so, I still recommend taking it.

It’s a hard class, guaranteed, but I’ve heard being able to do successfully in that class is highly dependent on your ability to budget your time successfully. There is no way you can even think about procrastinating in that class. The book material can also be hard, so your ability to read well might also be a factor in that class. Some of the books I’ve seen appear on the exam aren’t that hard; The Adventures of Huck Finn, Catch-22(fav book!), 1984, Candide and The Grapes of Wrath aren’t particularly hard to work with. However, the class also has some intense books; Othello, Hamlet, The Scarlet Letter, etc are all hard (to me, at least) in the sense that the plot is easy(ish) to follow, but understanding what’s actually going on can be a challenge.

If you haven’t taken AP Lang yet, I’d strongly recommend taking it. Even if you have taken AP Lang, I’d still recommend taking it. It’s great prep for college reading (if you care about that) and it looks a lot better on the resume, especially in senior year.

Of course, that’s just my 2 cents. I’m still waiting on taking it next year. I’m just telling you what I’ve heard from people I know who’ve taken it and from books that I’ve read that are (supposedly) commonplace with the class.

However, it really relies on your school as its hardness is ultimately dependent on your teacher. If you can, get advice from other seniors (if they’re not all gone already) about the class and factor that into your decision.

Hope I helped!

you should be more concerned about your sat scores than taking ap lit.

GenApo thank you so much for that. I never thought about it helping me with college reading too. You made a really good point. I will have to ultimately decide soon but I will talk to senior tomorrow about it. Also, a lot of the books you mentioned I have read in my history and honors English classes.

bump bump!
