Will one B hurt my chances at University of Michigan?

The first semester of this year (10th) was a little rough for me, I got 3 As 2 A-s and one B in my physics class. UMich takes the absolute value of grades so according to them, I received 5 As and 1 B.

How will this affect my chances of being accepted to UMich? I live in Michigan, so that might help a little.

It won’t, don’t sweat it.

Every piece of data on an application is looked at and weighed. So I disagree with those who say “it doesn’t matter”. (If one doesn’t matter, what about two? Three? See Sorites Paradox)

However, it’s one single semester grade of, what, 50+ on your transcript? A transcript that is one of three major, and 5+ minor, components of your application. The impact is non-zero, IMHO, but it’s extremely small. Certainly not worth worrying about, especially now that it’s in the past.

Focus on the future.

FWIW, let’s assume you’re an out-of-state student, for the sake of my opinion. The range of unweighted GPA’s in the last couple of admission seasons here on CC has been roughly 3.75-4.0. Per UMich’s website, the average uwGPA across the entire class was 3.9.

So, I doubt a B, or 2 or 3, will affect your chances, all that much, if any. Plenty of 4.0’s have been deferred and rejected.

I’ll disagree with you @RichInPitt. Grades and GPAs out of any context are meaningless. It depends on so many things, that the very small effect that a single B could have disappears.

I had 2 Bs freshman year, 0 Bs sophomore year, and 2 Bs junior year and I was accepted.
You’re fine as long as you are taking rigorous courses.

Ok thank you, I was really worried
