Will one class be a deal breaker?

I am a CCC student with a 4.0 gpa. I have 8 more classes to fulfill the IGETC requirement and major prep courses which will be done this Spring. I volunteer in the community and I accumulated more than half of my units while on active duty in the Navy.

My question is this, will I be able to transfer to one of the UC schools if I am missing the required second Calculus class? I am looking at transferring to UCLA, UCB, or UCSD (in that order) and majoring in Economics. It seems UCLA Econ is pretty strict on transfer students doing all major course prep prior to transfer. My issue is I have to do the prerequisites before taking these Calculus classes.

I really hope I don't have to wait one year because I need to do one more math class. It seems like such an inefficient use of time.

Thanks in advance

you MUST complete ur IGETC and major requirements before or during the spring 2010 term. if u dont, u dont qualify. im assuming ur talking about calc 2? i dont see y u cant finish it. u can take calc 1 in fall 09 and calc 2 in spring 2010. and if u failed the placement test in ur school or w/e, u could have been taking precalc in the summer.

you won’t get in to UCLA and UC Berkeley without calc 2.

I’m taking trig this summer because it is a prerequisite for the precalc. Looks like I’m out of luck then.

I placed as high as possible on the placement exam. It is a four course sequence. and unfortunately I was taking business classes with the intent on transferring to SDSU before switching it up to Econ and realizing I could get into a better school.

You can definitely take Calc I at some places without Precalc. It might be difficult, but its doable. Do the research and look for schools with liberal attitudes towards Prereq checks, then take Calc I there and Calc II at your home school. Definitely don’t let this be the thing that keeps you out of the top UCs.

What I don’t get is how your Navy credits moved to help supplement your CC credits. I asked some different UC’s and they said, I couldn’t use military school to help me transfer.

They did not 50cal. I would just use my military experience in my personal statement.

CollegeHopeful, thank you. I have looked at the catalogs of some other schools in the area and one of them lets you test into Calc 1 without even doing Trig or PreCalc (unlike my school). I’m going to try to get into it for the Fall.

If you do take Calc 1 without PreCalc, make sure you know PreCalc and Trig! Calculus is no walk in the park. If you don’t have strong algebra skills, and if you don’t have your trig facts at the tips of your fingers, you could be very unhappy in Calc.

i took calculus without ever taking precalc and did fine. You just need to know algebra and have a basic understanding of trig.

I took PreCalc in High School. However, that was quite a few years ago. I may just apply anyways with Calc 1 being done in the spring, and trying to petition the board to see if I can take the Calc 2 next summer. Has anyone ever heard of them making this exception?

@UChopeful

Take the Calc 1 at the school that doesn’t require PreCal. You say you’re doing trig now, that’s great. If you’re a 4.0 student, I have a strong feeling that you could complete Calc 1 just fine without PreCal. This route is much easier and will certainly strengthen your application. I strongly advise against petitioning for Calc 2 to be taken in the summer. Econ is an impacted major, you need those pre-requisites to be completed.

UChopeful, be advised you will not get into an impacted major at UCLA or Berk without the required calculus classes. However, you have a high chance at UCSD. I was rejected by UCLA because I didnt have the calc requirement done, however UCSD accepted me into econ and they require three calc classes and I had not done any.

If you can knock out calc 2 by spring, I would suggest you do it if you really want to go to UCLA or CAL. If not, you should easily get accepted to UCSD without calc 2 or 3.

If for chance I do not test into the Calc class and can’t finish both Calc’s by Spring 2010, I will more than likely be going to UCSD. I live in San Diego anyways, and I heard the Econ program there is still a top 20 in the country.

Figure out a way to finish the calculus classes. Not too late to take them second session summer at a UC. UCSD requires Cal 1, 2, and 3 so chances are slim for it too. But you have a 4.0 so you should be good.

Who said calculus is hard? Calculus is a cake walk! Especially Cal 1 + 2, where you don’t even have to understand the proofs to pass the class.

What CC are you going to in San Diego?

I drove to Grossmont from Del Mar in order to take their 6 unit Precalc Trig Combo class to cut out a semester.

Additionally check out ALL the CCs in san diego area to see if one of them has a calc 1 during winter session .

Also they do have usually short term classes- so you may be able to find calc one in short term. And you can petition to register without meeting the preqs as well

You have more luck petitioning to register without the preq at CC than petitoning the board of a UC

San Diego City
Mesa
Miramar
MiraCosta
Palomar
Grossmont
Cuyamaca
and Southwestern (i think that is the other one)

Also you should note that MOST of the CCs have two placement tests. One will place you at the highest in Algebra or Trig, the others will test your Calc skills and place you into one of the Calcs or above.

And you do not NEED to have IGETC done, it is just highly recommended- you can meet general ed requirements in other ways.

I passed the placement exam at Palomar, so I’ll be taking Calc 1 there in the fall and Calc 2 there in the spring. Thanks for all your help guys. I’m back on track!
