Will one semester of community college harm me?

I am in my first semester at the University of Pittsburgh, I absolutely hate it here and Im 100% sure that I want to transfer. I feel extremely homesick, but I also don’t like the college itself at all. I know that I want to transfer to a different 4 year school, but I’m not sure which one yet. My idea was to finish out the semester at pitt and then do my second semester at the community college near my house. My mom is concerned that going to community college will affect my chances of getting into a different school next fall, and staying at pitt would show that I can finish out a year of college.I really don’t want to do this because I am so unhappy here and I’m genuinely concerned about my mental health if I stay here. After she said this, I thought I should try to transfer directly into a different school, but I’ve realized that some schools don’t accept freshman transfers and even for those that do, I don’t have much time to explore those schools before I apply. So my overall question is will going to the community college next semester really affect my chances of getting into a different 4 year school? Thanks for any advice!

I think your transfer options will be better if you can stay the year at Pitt, especially if you can get decent grades.

I have to ask what you’ve tried so far at Pitt. LOTS of students find the first semester of college tough. They are homesick, don’t make friends right away, miss their families and home towns, and realize that college is hard work. But lots of students start finding their feet second semester, too. Have you got a part time job? Tried out clubs? Gone on activities organized by your dorm or to events on campus? Explored restaurants, bookstores, etc near campus? Looked for places to volunteer near campus? Been to the student health center if you feel mentally unwell? Talked to your RA? My advice is to push yourself to stay busy and meet new people. Work hard in your classes, too. Plan to stay the year, but fill out transfer apps at winter break if you still want to.

Depends on the quality of the community college. In some states, community colleges are well set up for transfer preparation to the state universities. In others, they are not very good, with poor coverage of needed courses for common majors.

Your immediate need is to get yourself to the counseling center at U Pitt. The people there have worked with a lot of students like you over the years, and wiil be able to help you sort through your specific transfer options as well as provide access to any needed mental health services. Head there first thing tomorrow, and get that started.

It is likely that taking a gap semester to work and apply for transfer with one semester of U Pitt grades, or staying at the CC long enough to complete a full AA or AS degree, would be better options than applying from the CC midway through a semester there with one semester of U Pitt grades. In both of those strategies you can show a clear focus on your longer-range goal. Look at what your potential CC has to offer. Are there any guaranteed transfer or articulation agreements for the major you are interested in? Can you communicate now with the Transfer Counselor there to find out where people with your major end up, and if they receive the amount of aid you might need? What counseling services are available if you would find that you struggle there as much as you have at U Pitt?
