I just received a W in a class called Fundamentals of Healing Touch. It is a non-transferable 1-unit class that I wanted to take for fun. However, I got quite sick and I dropped the class on the first day and I received a W. I am wondering if this will hurt my UC application?

I applied to UCB, UCLA, and tag for UCSB for chemical engineering. I have a 4.0 GPA and I will have completed all required classes. I am Vice President of PTK Honor Society at my community college and a private math/physics tutor. Withdrawals are definitely no good, but I'm hoping mine is not a big deal because it's a non-transferable 1-unit class.

Are you sure you’ll get a W? At all the CCs I’ve been enrolled, if you drop a class within around 1-2 weeks of the class start, you won’t get a W. It won’t even show up in your transcript at all.

It won’t matter at all. It’s nontransferable.

By the way, if you’re right that you’ve completed all the pre-reqs for your major and have a 4.0 GPA, I think you have a 95% chance of gaining admission to UCB and UCLA. Good luck man!

How’d you get a W if you dropped the class on the first day? That’d be really lame. Anyways, it isn’t going to hurt your chances one bit. Just report it and you’ll be fine.

@RamonaFalls @Snorlaz Yeah, I received a W. The reason I got a W is because the class was only two days long. It was eight hours a day on a Saturday and Sunday. The policy at my school is that you have to drop the class before 25% of the class days have passed. So technically I dropped the class on a day that 50% of the class days had passed.

@Cayton Thanks for the encouraging words! I will probably go to Berkeley if I get accepted. I love the campus and the weirdos in the surrounding area. Hopefully I don’t get mugged…

I’m glad to see that appeals to you. Berkeley’s certainly not for everyone.

A word of advice, though: Berkeley’s engineering programs are insanely difficult, even by engineering standards. Be on your “A” game every day if you accept admission to that school.

Also…get a small knife/switchblade. The city of Berkeley isn’t too safe in certain areas.
