Hi, this is my first post here. Anyways, I was wonderin how much of an impact reducing my schedule from 6 classes to 5 would have on my chances of getting into a competitive university. Im taking AP gov, AP calc AB, and AP Eng lit this year for APs and the class i want to drop is Spanish 4. Would colleges see a 5 class schedule as a sign of laziness???I'm a senior btw.

Explain to us WHY you aren't just taking Spanish 4.

what would you take instead is a better question

because she wants 5 classes. duh.

im in a similar situation and thats why i think that i know. i could easily be wrong and theres some deeper reason.

exactly. i would gladly switch it with a class i like but my school is soo overcrowded that it would be unlikely that could happen. So i can either stick with spanish 4 or drop it and have a shorter day and probably use that extra time to go to the gym. As for why i want to drop the class, i just don't think its worth it. I really dont like the way spanish is thought at school. I've been taking it for three years and haven't got to where i would like to be in terms of fluency. So i just dont see the point in wasting my time in the class. But if it will look bad to colleges, i might have to rethink dropping it.

It will look bad in comparison to not dropping it, so stick it out.

i know it will look bad in comparison but by what degree?? I don't wanna waste a whole year in the class if itll only give me a modest boost.

what is your definition of top colleges? if you're talking about the ones at the top 15 of USNWR's list, then yes you really ought to have 4 years of a foreign language. As you go down the list, one spanish class doesn't make much of a difference.

i think thats how 99% of students at my school do it. And i think thats how all public illinois schools are. In fact you need to go through a process to get a 6th major.

Lunch, mandatory gym, mandatory study hall, a double period. Thats 4 out of 9 periods of the day right there.

k thanx for replies everyone. Well ive decided to campaign vehemently for journalism instead of spanish. But if that doesn't work out, I might just suck it in and deal with spanish. Wish me luck...

i think you should drop it and be done with it. maybe take it at a cc or something. Don't add journalism just to have 6 classes because thats just ridiculous.

i'm in the same situation. choosing not to take ap spanish, but it DOES happen to be the same block as a chorus class i LOVE (am also intending to major in theatre, so it's kind of related?). is this ok? i'm also planning to do an independent study w/ a history teacher...do you think this replaces it?

bump dis yo.
