Will Penn State be a good fit?

Penn State- UP is my top choice, as it an affordable state school with decent programs for my major (Computer Science). But for some reason, I keep feeling paranoid that it won't be a good fit for me. All I hear is that its predominately white school with a bunch of school pride. Apparently football and partying is huge there, but that's not the type of guy I am. I'm Asian American and more of a tech geek/gamer than anything. Will there be a niche for me?

its very hard to know whether a school is a good “fit” for someone since that’s a very personal call. I would suggest you go and visit and if you have any friends or people from your high school who attend Penn State you may be able to shadow their classes and/or stay over a night in a dorm to judge for youself whether you’d be happy there.

Penn State is not the only option in state- you could look at Pitt and Temple. Both have programs in computer science and are more diverse than Penn State. [Department of Computer Science | University of Pittsburgh](http://www.cs.pitt.edu/)
[Department of Computer and Information Sciences](http://www.temple.edu/cis/)

The asian population here is not small by any means. Not to be racist, but half of my floor is asian girls who are from China, Taiwan, etc. Yes, people party. But they don’t do it in the dorms (usually - they tend to go downtown to frats/apartments) so you can stay in your dorm with some friends playing video games and not be disturbed at all. And if you aren’t into football, no big deal. A lot of people who ARE into football can’t even get tickets so it’s not like no one is anywhere but the stadium on game days. And again, it’ll be quiet on those days so maybe that’s better for you (although if you live in East Halls then you can usually hear the announcers/fans, so that is something to consider).

My son has similar interests to yours and hasn’t had any problem find like-minded kids to hang out with. A lot of his friends (IST and engineering majors) are active in the Urban Gaming Club. There is also a Gaming Club that hosts role playing games and a Game Design Club. Often on weekends some one organizes a LAN party. He had football tickets freshman year, went to one game and that was enough. He and many of his friends drink, but that is not the main focus of their weekend activities (and they are mostly legal at this point). If you decide on PSU you may want to consider the Special Living Options ([Housing: Undergraduates](<a href=“Home Page | LiveOn”>Home Page | LiveOn)) like E House or FISE.
