Will putting "undetermined" major help?

if i put bio or something very competitive, will it actually be a disadvantage to me?

also, in my personal statement if i state that an event inspired me to go into a specific major but then i say undetermined in my app, will they be suspicious?

thanks

No it won't have any effect on admission.

Well it actually depends and varies on the university. i.e. applying to UC Berkeley as an Electrical Engineering/Computer Science Major is MUCH harder than regular admission (given it's a different process from regular admission).
Just check with your schools and make sure that you aren't stuck in the major you choose initially and that you can switch to a more competitive major later.

Good luck!

If there's a whole different school or program for it (like engineering usually is) then yes, it can be more competitive.

If it's just biology, which is usually offered within the "college of liberal arts and sciences" (or whatever it's called at a school) then no, it's not going to make a difference.

If it's a very rare, uncommon major like Egyptology and you can prove through essays and ECs and activities that you're dedicated to egyptology, then yes, putting that major can help.

My advice is to just honestly put down what you think you might be pursuing. I mean if biology is what you want to pursue, then step up to the challenge and forget about the "disadvantages." Just be truthful; don't think too much about this stuff.

There's a pretty big difference between wanting to go to go to Upenn for either Political Science or Nursing. (~10% acceptance rate vs. 40%)
