Im a junior and I currently have all B's in my 8 classes except for AP English which I have a D in. I understand what we do and I'm pretty sure I could average a high C or B but it's just that I've turned in 5 assignments late. My teacher is advising me to drop down to regular English and take AP English next semester or next year. What I'm wondering is if a UC school will not accept me if I go down to regular English since I've been in Honors English classes my freshman and sophomore year.

Are any other of those 8 classes weighted? I believe UC’s require a 3.0 UC GPA for in state and 3.4 Weighted OOS just to apply. Hopefully i’m not mistaken, but wouldn’t that put you under a 3?

Regardless, what english class you decide to take probably won’t play a significant role on your application and taking regular english certainly doesn’t make or break an app. However, a low GPA does and if you’re not doing as well in Lang/Lit, it might be a good idea to transfer out.

I agreee with @bonsly. The UC’s are very competitive with the majority of schools having a average UC GPA of 4.0+. If you intend to apply, you will need better grades than just B’s and 1-2 C’s on your transcript would be detrimental to your application. You need to work hard and get those B’s into the A range and get that D up to a solid B.
Make sure you spend time studying for the SAT and/or ACT and aim for scores in the 1900+SAT or 29+ ACT range.
You do not need to AP or Honors English to get into a UC. You need good grades…
Good Luck.

Regular English will not prevent you from getting into a UC. Getting mostly B’s (and even C’s, or worse) will.
