Please clarify. In the OP to this thread, you said your mom was a SAHM who relies on alimony and child support. Then you say her annual income is $175,000 a year. Alimony and child support must be included on your FAFSA form for your mom…who is your custodial parent.
With $175,000 in income, your family contribution would be in the $50,000 a year range…or more. And that’s for FAFSA only schools.
For any school requiring non-custodial parent info…you can forget about need based aid.
There is no point spending the time and energy to fill out all the FA forms. Perhaps you could show your Dad one of the charts available online that shows even for schools that cost $70K per year that aid phases out at about $250K of income. Perhaps you should come up with a complete plan and report to present to your Dad on the schools you are interested in and the costs. Definitely have a section in there on what you would be willing to do to contribute like summer and/or on campus jobs to cover your personal expenses and books? If that’s not enough for him perhaps he would be willing to pay part and give you a long term loan for the rest at good terms?
Why shouldn’t OP fill out the FAFSA? OP lives with mother, so father’s income and assets won’t be on the forms. Also, some schools require the FAFSA to qualify for merit aid.
The OP should fill out the fafsa…but if mom’s income is $175,000, it’s not likely OP will get much aid except loans.
The schools with the more generous aid typically require non-custodial parent info via the non-custodial parent profile…or a school form…so dad’s $2 million income will be considered.
