Will retaking a class I failed raise my GPA?

I’m a Junior currently and during my Freshman year I got an F in one class because I had personal issues which ended me up getting in legal fights with someone and all the mess.

Because of that my GPA dropped a lot and although I’ve been making it up with lots of As, it’s still kind of hard…
If I retake that class with the F and get an A, how much will my GPA rise?
I have around 2.95 right now.
I have around 145 units right now and I need 180 to graduate but I’m planning on taking around 190-200ish units.

Any information would be helpful.

Yes, the new grade will replace the F. It will still show on the transcript but will not factor into the calculations.

When you mean not factor into calculations, do you mean it won’t change my GPA?

They are saying that the F will show up on your transcript, but will not impact your GPA. Your GPA should go up, although I suppose it could differ by school.

2 Options - You need to find out if the course is “Repeatable” or not.

Option #1 - If it’s not categorized as a “repeatable” course, you can still repeat it for a new grade but both your F and new grade will be averaged together in your GPA. So if you got an F, then got an A, both grades would average out to a C in your GPA.

Option #2 - If it is a “repeatable” course, then your new grade replaces the F and will not be averaged together. So if you got an F, then got an A, only your A would reflect in your GPA & your F would be removed from your GPA. (But your F will always remain on your transcripts)

Only way to find out if it’s a “repeatable” course or not is by asking Admissions.
I’ve experienced both scenarios above on my transcripts.

Then use “GPA Calculator” website to find out how much it will raise your GPA for either scenario.

The above statement is not actually true. If you took a course and got an F you can retake it and the F will be erased from the GPA. Any course with an F grade is repeatable at least once.

In terms of grad school they may factor both in but for UC undergrad purposes a repeat will erase the F. Don’t let confusion factor into this.

The “above statement” is not true!
As I said in my post, both scenarios happened to me since one was repeatable & one was not repeatable. I retook my non-repeatable & both my 1st attempt & 2nd attempt are included in my GPA. I was livid & my academic counselor walked over to Admissions & fought for me but Admissions wouldn’t budge. Both attempts are included in my GPA for that non-repeatable course.

Some people offer their conjecture without having experienced it themselves. Especially, the ones who rarely cite their source on policy from the college’s websites.
Just email Admissions instead of being confused by non-experienced advice!

Let’s put an end to this. I will not respond further.

From the UC website:

https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/q-and-a/repeating/#1

Any GPA calculations done at the CCC level are not the same as how the UC views it.

I know I said I would not respond further but I want to clarify only for outside readers to avoid this ongoing confusion as they make their way through their courses.

Non-repeatable courses usually mean a course has been taken too many times with subpar grades (Ws are sometimes factored in). So a W, then and F, then a D, you get the picture. In those cases a CCC may or may not budge in terms of erasing previous grades. How the UC views it will be at its discretion. It is a CCC thing, not a UC thing.

Do not let that situation obsfuscate the fact that a simple request by OP to repeat one bad grade from freshman year is simply that. A repeatable course that will erase the F from the GPA. This is standard operating procedure. Thank you and stay calm. ?

What you’re missing from this is you’re talking about the CCC not removing the first grade, not the UC.

The GPA showing on the CCC transcript is not always the same after the UC goes through it. They make that clear on the UC website. The UC would have kept you at 4.0 without AR. But no loss either way.

The only time that doesn’t happen is the case, curiously enough at Haas, where they say anything D or lower in a major prep course is kept as the grade even if retaken.

I love when little girls run out of the room in dramatic fashion & flair, then come right back after they realize nobody chased them to see if they were OK.
