will retaking a core class ruin chances into get into good graduate program?!?

Ok, to tell my situation in a nutshell: I am a second year Kinesiology student at SSU and took 16 units this semester, one of which is anatomy. Up to this point I have a 3.3-3.4 GPA and am doing relatively well this semester, minus anatomy. I pretty much had a rough semester between personal family issues and getting a job. At this point I have about a grade that is floating between a C- and C. My school just changed their retake policy so that if you receive a C- or lower, you are able to retake the course and drop the old grade. However, if you get a C or better, then if you retake the course the school is going to average the two grades. So, by some divine miracle if I ace my last two tests I could receive a B-. But I am going to take anatomy over regardless because I need an A to get into good Physical Therapy programs. Meaning that the best I could do (given I get the B-) would maybe get a B+/A-. So my dilemma is deciding if I should just try to get the C- and retaking the course all together or to shoot for the B-.

Also, would my chances of getting into a good PT program be hindered by retaking my anatomy class?

I would really appreciate some feedback, this is stressing me out!!! :(

I think that you must focus on mastering the material for a class that you consider “core”, and if your college offers you the ability to retake it be thankful. The alternative of studying the material on your own will be that much harder.

To try to second guess what graduate admission committees would do or not do is not the point, and is basically counter productive.

You should take this question to your advisor. He/she has a lot more experience with this particular issue than we do.

If you were my kid, I’d tell you that it is time you stopped fretting about this and got back to the books. Do your best in this class THIS TERM, and earn the best grade that you can in it THIS TERM. Do not deliberately try to get a C- if you are capable of doing better work than that! You do not know for certain that you will be able to fit in a repeat of this course in the future!
