I'm and African American female applying to the Pratt School of engineering at Duke. My Sat score was a 2010 and my ACT score was a 28 (Bad I know but I retook it last week and I'm awaiting the score. Duke says they'll still consider it) i got a 680 on the Physics Subject test and a 710 on the Math 2. I know that these arent great scores but they do add another element to my application. I realize that Duke is a reach for me but you never know. Should I send these to them or would this hurt me rather than help my chances?

Interesting question. While there isn’t a direct comparison between ACT and SAT subject tests, an ACT of 28 would be approximately a math score of 630 if all is equal, so unless your scores on the math and science sections of the ACT are amazingly high, these scores will enhance your application.
In general, those are good scores. Of course when you are considering Duke, there is no way to predict. Duke, and schools like it get enough students with perfect scores to choose from, so they consider many factors. I would send them, especially because they show your proficiency in physics. The curve is high because only students who are proficient already would attempt it. According to about dot com, the median is about 630. You’re well above it.

@Pennylane2011 ok interesting point. i’ll send them because my ACT math was pretty high but my science was VERY low so I’ll send it to show that I’m not a complete goof when it comes to science

Bumpppp

I think the physics score will help you then, and a math score over 700 can’t hurt. I don’t believe that colleges look for reasons to reject students, so they will consider your high ACT math score and these scores too. I’m not an admissions officer, but I think these scores will be in your favor.

I looked on another thread of yours and see that your ACT math score is 32. That is a good score. You are a stronger student in math than reading, and the composite ACT score isn’t always a good reflection of students’ strong points when they are “lopsided”. A 32 composite corresponds to SAT of 1400-1430 (M+CR), so if both scores were equal, that would correspond to a math score of 700-710. Your SAT subject test scores will add to your application, and the physics will show that you are more capable at science than your ACT science score does. I would also suggest that you send these to all your colleges, even if it is past the deadline, as this information will be updated in your file as they consider you further for admission or possible merit aid.
The ACT science section is reading based, and this may be why your score is less than on straight science tests, since it depends on the skill you are not as strong in. I think this lopsidedness is more common in students attracted to STEM fields. This is all the more reason for sending that physics score because it reflects your strength.

I actually got a 28 but I retook it and am waiting for the results. The first time I took it I had absolutely NO prep but this time I actually prepared for it and I’m expecting to get between a 30-32. I’ll just have to wait and see

I mean the very first words of your post indicated your ethnicity so you know that the scores wont hurt you as bad as they would a regular person

Oh that was so politically incorrect. A “regular person”? So black people are abnormal?

I think sending your subject scores will help your resume. The scores are not awful they are a 680 and 710.
chance me?

Your composite ACT score is 28 and the math subtest score is 32. I was trying to compare your SAT math subject test score to your ACT math score to determine if it could hurt you, and the only way it could possibly hurt your chances is if it was much lower. Since there isn’t a direct comparison, but there are charts that compare ACT to SAT M+CR, I was estimating. 32 math is approximately 700-730, which is the range of your SAT math 2, so it would not hurt you, and the physics score can only help.

I don’t know how long a wait for the new ACT scores, and since it is getting later in the application cycle, I’d consider sending them now.

When I registered for the test I picked for it to be sent to Dule so when the scores are available that will immediately go to Duke. And ok thats good to know my math wont hurt me

I meant sending the SAT subject tests to Duke and your other colleges. Are you still being considered for admission/merit? Although colleges have a deadline for submitting test scores, students are allowed to send additional achievements for consideration such as awards and grades. This would be considered additional information for them to consider. It shows your physics ability and that is higher than your ACT science score, and with physics being considered a rigorous subject, could possibly add a lot to your application.
It’s good that Duke will get your new ACT scores quickly, and if you are happy with them, you can send them to your other colleges too.

I sent them a few daysago so they should get them in time.Duke says they will consider tests taken in January and February so Im not worried about that

Great, how about your other colleges? I saw that you are selected for possible merit award at GA tech. Sending your SAT math and physics subject test scores may help you there as well.

Ga tech gave me an 80K scholarship so I’m good with them. I sent my subject scores to Princeton and UVA but that is because they require them

That’s great about GA tech. Congratulations! Hope you hear good news from your other choices.

Thank you!
