SAT ESSAY

Inconsistency is commonly thought to be an undesirable personality trait, and inconsistent people are viewed as indecisive and weak willed. On the other hand, firm commitment to an idea or plan of action is associated with personal and intellectual strength, stability, and honesty. Thus, once we have made a choice or taken a stand, it is best not to change.
Assignment: Is it best not to change our ideas, opinions, or behaviors?

Having strong, unwavering opinions is sometimes seen as a desirable personality trait. Those who are inconsistent often appear weak, indecisive, or uninformed. It is important to have firm commitments to ideas, however when presented with new evidence one must always reevaluate his or her convictions. Change can sometimes be beneficial. There are many examples throughout history and in current society that would prove that change is sometimes necessary. Refusing to change ones opinions or behaviors in an effort to remain consistent when given strong reason to change is only deleterious to oneself and society.

The struggle that African Americans went through in the 1950s and 1960s for Civil Rights provides an example of a beneficial change. Many white Americans were steadfast in their belief that black people were inferior to them. The problem took root in the past when numerous African Americans were enslaved as plantation workers in the South. Discrimination is not OK. The opinions and behavior of the white people needed to be changed. Eventually after the Brown Decision and the Civil Rights Act those who previously held racist beliefs were forced to change. In this situation, change was the best option. Had this change not occurred we would be living in a very unjust society.

An example that applies to society today is the decision to smoke. Thousands of Americans smoke everyday despite the plethora of warnings of the harmful effects from smoking. Smoking causes cancer, is one of the mantras that is fed to the youth in an effort to curb the problem of smoking. Once someone has decided to smoke, hopefully they would not remain unchanged and (cant read) after hearing all the warnings. Changing your behavior and quitting smoking is often seen as strength, not the opposite. If one makes an ill-informed decision once in life, (either they or he) should not feel obligated to keep the belief to appear consistent. Consistency is not always a appealing quality.

There can be strength in consistency, but one should never act against what he or she believes in order to remain consistent. Change is often good. If noone ever changed, life would be dull. In cases were an action is dangerous or unfair, never sacrifice integrity for consistency. Once one takes a stand, always reevaluate the decision.
