It definitely won’t hurt your chances. Learning a new language gives you an edge over the competition and study abroad is a life changing and humbling experience. Employers definitely look for that.

It definitely will. The skills you learn while abroad are invaluable in the workforce.
Study abroad will definitely help – if you really acquire a skill, or something that will translate into a skill later on. I agree with blitzny on the langauge issue. Really, the most important thing about study abroad is language acquisition. If you become a lawyer, or a doctor, or get an MBA, that’s great. But if you are a lawyer, doctor, or MBA that speaks – really speaks and understands – German or French or Chinese or Italian or Spanish, or whatever, then you have an extra skill set which makes you even more marketable/valuable to your future employers.

A lot of scholarships and programs that are being set up via our uncle Sam are directed towards language acquisition…

Obviously also important are cultural sensitivity and the ability to see issues in a more objective way – study abroad helped me immensely in this area.

My personal opinion, for what it’s worth, is that if you’re going to study abroad, whatever you study, you should gain a working knowledge of a foreign language. Since finishing college (and even before) I have been offered several jobs not because of my degree, but because I speak Spanish and German.
