I’ve heard several things about what is considered a good SAT subject test score for top schools (Ivies, Stanford, MIT etc.).
I’ve always wondered, say you get a 760 in a subject test (which is already a good score for most subjects), send it to colleges and then in a few months, retake the same subject test and submit a slightly higher score to the same colleges, would it disadvantage you?
Would colleges be impressed by your drive for a better score or put off by the fact that you may not have anything better to do on a Saturday than take tests?
IMO, this. Stanford, MIT, etc. are not looking to fill a class full of academic drones. Spend the time polishing your essays.
760 is a very good score. In general, there is no need to retake that. It might depend on the subject, the school, and the major. If you are going to major in math at MIT, you might want to try for an 800. Some colleges specify that they require two or even three subject tests and that one must be STEM. I think MIT is one of them. The general rule is anything over 700 is worth submitting to top colleges, but if you submit a 720 and a 760 to say, Georgetown, that might not be uber-competitive, but it’s very respectable.
In your shoes, I personally would not retake a 760 unless you are submitting to a particular school for a particular major, and they require a particular subject test. Hope that’s not too vague. There is no definitive answer, especially without knowing specifics. Look at the requirements of the college you are interested in.
I almost always agree with @Lindagaf, but I disagree on this one. Maybe, just maybe, for MIT, retake a M2 if the prep is not too onerous. Otherwise, the statistical difference, IMO, is meaningless. If you get rejected for a 760, my bet is they would have rejected you for an 800. Subject Tests scores are a very small part of the overall application. Strong test scores will not offset weaknesses elsewhere.
@Lindagaf The 760 was on Bio M and I plan on applying to Stanford REA with the hopes of majoring in biology. Whilst Stanford doesn’t require subject tests, they’re strongly recommended and considering I want to major in biology, I was wondering whether it would be worth submitting a higher score
@skieurope you’re actually a legend, cheers for the help on this and other posts
Thanks!
Fair point @skieurope . That’s true, you are more right than me:-). OP, I see no need to retake a 760 in bio.
Great score. Congrats. No need to retake. Best of luck
