Will tech accept a liberal arts kinda gal?

An engineer I am not. I think I am a competitive applicant at some liberal arts colleges, but I know tech has a great international relations program. Can I still get in considering my math background? Or will tech look right past someone like me?

3.9 GPA (w)
AP Eng. Lang- 3
AP US- 4
6 APs total, 5 honors classes
SATs- Math 650, Writing 750, Verbal 590
Senior year- AP French, AP English Lit, AB Calc, AP Art, Foreign Policy, Film Studies
My essay made my college counselor cry.
My recommendations are fingers crossed going to be good, but of course I can't know for sure.
ECs: Figure Skating, Yearbook (editor in chief), Art (art club president, photography commissions, school paper photographer), Youth in Government (outstanding statesman, Presider), Community Service Leader, Speech and Debate (speech captain, NFL degree of excellence), School Chorus, NHS, NFHS.

your math isnt that bad

I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
I’m an engineering major, and your classes look about the same as mine. I did have AP chem, bio, and phys… but first two has almost nothing to do with engineering. Physics… yeah… but many of my friends don’t have physics credit.
Also, GT is not ALL about engineering. They do have other majors. And from what I’ve heard, they don’t consider your applying major, and allow you to change your major with no GPA minimum, etc.
I wouldn’t worry if you’re too ‘liberal-artsy’ Only thing I’m a bit worried about is your AP scores and SAT score, but they’re fine.
You do have a chance.

Oh ok cool.
I just feel like since I didn’t take BC, I usually get B’s in math, and I only took honors chem and honors physics instead of AP I’m going to look weak. I know not everyone is an engineer, but most majors at tech are very math-science based. I decided to apply in the spur of the moment like…yesterday. All my other apps have been done for over a month.
Do y’all know any international relations majors?
Thank you!

yes,you HAVE a good chance.
you are a ‘gal’, as you stated in the post title.
GT boys & girls ratio is 2 to 1 ,
& according to GT admin, last year GT finally had aprx 30% or 31% girls.
as long as your gpa & sat are high, you have a good shot!

Just to let you know, Tech doesn’t take recommendations, so that’s one less thing to worry about :)

eduedm - GT doesn’t practice affirmative action in that regard; # of girl admits and boy admits have been relatively consistent.

You’ll probably get in. Maybe try to take the ACT to ensure that. 590 is pretty darn low for CR. I’m like you, except my maths are all 90s and 91s instead of Bs. Tech doesn’t JUST want engineers, and they differentiate between engineers & ivan allen students. you don’t have to be good at math to get into tech! they want a little diversity, and to expand their ivan allen program :)

I applied as a liberal arts major and was accepted. Didn’t have a particularly strong math/science background either. B’s in AP Calc BC last year and I didn’t take a science last year due to scheduling conflicts. You can do it! 8)

oh good to know thatelephantt!
I just finished and submitted my application.

My son is in the Sam Nunn School of Int’l Affairs and is having a great experience. They really work hard at getting you overseas.

Figureskater is going to be the most indie person in the Class of 2015 (which is really awesome because my tastes in music are pretty damn hipster).

tobeducated- I’m so happy to hear he’s had a good experience. I see myself spending my summers abroad more than anything
SLightManifesto- You have no idea the degree to which that statement is true. I’ll be listenin to The Shins, wearing skinny jeans, eating tofu, and contemplating the artistic merits of the dairy queen statue. At the same time. Are you already at tech, or a hopeful, or have you gotten in? what’s the deal for you? :)

@Figureskater, I have already gotten in and am probably going. I’ve got 2 other colleges to hear back from (neither of which I’ve visited) so I consider Tech my #1 right now and like I said, I’m probably going there. Also, the Shins are a great band! I don’t exactly wear skinny jeans, plaid, or black-rimmed glasses, but you can always find me obsessing over Neutral Milk Hotel. Do you listen to them? I’m also huge into Bomb the Music Industry!, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Titus Andronicus, and Streetlight Manifesto. I don’t know if BTMI! is popular down your way, but indie, punk, and ska are pretty popular up my way. Probably due to all the LACs we have up here, but I don’t mind because I dig indie-folk, indie-rock, ska, and punk.

PS: Chutes Too Narrow - such an awesome album. I need to download Oh, Inverted World b/c I hear that is lo-fi, and I love lo-fi indie.

I think you will most likely get in.

(note: there has been an increase in women enrollment in the liberal arts program at tech, but almost no increase in the number of women in the college of engineering. Unless they cut down on the acceptances in the liberal arts and focus more on women in engineering, which is possible, I think you are fine)

“(which is really awesome because my tastes in music are pretty damn hipster).”

You broke hipster law by saying that. Obviously, you are a boot-legged jean poseur. And Neutral Milk Hotel = way too mainstream now. ;)

@SLightManifesto and iwantivies- don’t be hatin! Neutral Milk Hotel is a great band! BTMI! is like a peppy punk Barenaked Ladies if you ask me–not a huge fan. No one ha heard of them, but i mean, if they was popular, they wouldn’t be indie right? haha. I like chill music. I’m more into acoustic and folk. Nickel Creek is my fave. I’m also big on deathcab for cutie, and right now, The Decemberists.

^^Haha I know…like I said, I’m not really a hipster but our tastes in music tend to coincide. And NMH is very mainstream but they are still independent label and are awesome folk. Indie is starting to take on the label of a music genre now though - as in one with a specific sound, not just independent label, but that is definitely one part of it!

I’m impressed you’ve heard BTMI though, props to that (unless you just youtubed them and listened to I Don’t Love You Anymore hahaha but in all seriousness, you seem pretty cool).

NMH though - densest lyrics ever but such simple music. Song Against Sex on On Avery Island has 2 chords in it the entire time! Oh Comely off ITAOTS is another one of those songs with very few chords - very simple but such a beautiful song.

I’m not really into Death Cab for Cutie, but I will check out Nickel Creek. If you like acoustic + folk though, you may like Andrew Jackson Jihad (acoustic guitar and upright bass and also a few more instruments in some songs such as mandolin, drums, etc…). They are folk punk. People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People Alive is an awesome album from start to finish with a great message “Welcome to this world, have as much fun as you would like while helping others have as much fun as you’re having. Be kind to those you love, and be kind to those you don’t, but for God’s sake you gotta be kind and respectful because we’re all one soul. Be the best ****ing human that you can be!”

Oh indie hasn’t meant “independent” for a while now.
In the art room we have a huge stack of CD’s. BTMI had pretty drawings on it, so I played it. You seem pretty cool too. I have an appreciation for music appreciators. I know very little about music myself though. I’ll definitely check out your recommendations! Sounds uplifting.
I feel like you’re from somewhere up north. Massachusetts maybe? New Hampshire?

Haha yeah I hear you on that. I don’t know anything about music or music theory or how to play it but I can appreciate good music and listen to it. I have a lot of friends involved with music so they tend to talk about it and show me some ins and outs about theory, but in general, I don’t know any more than the average person.

I’m a little bit more south of MA/NH though still in New England - Connecticut.

Also, I listened to Nickel Creek a little - definitely a pretty unique sound. I hear hints of folk, country, bluegrass, etc…I might mediafire an album this weekend and give it a full listen but When In Rome was a pretty good song.
