Will the GRE kill my chances?

Hi all,

I'm a recent college grad applying to phd programs in islamic studies. I'm taking the gre in five days and am very stressed about my potential scores, especially because I'm really bad with math. I expect to get perhaps a 700V/450Q, although who knows what will happen test day as I tend to do very bad on standardized exams.

I have a 4.0 from top school, speak arabic, persian, elem. german and turkish, have great recs, good statement, much research experience. I'm applying to all the top schools basically - harvard, yale, princeton, georgetown, etc. Will I still have a shot with low gre scores? please be honest!

GRE isn’t everything, there are people who enter these top schools with below average scores. Just try your best! That’s all you or anybody can do.

Your verbal score should be pretty good if you are scoring 700, and your quant score should not hurt you because of your intended field. Your language skills are amazing! Think about it this way: you might be pitted against an applicant who scored, say, a 650Q for a field that will never, ever require a student to use quant skills, but will that applicant also read and/or speak five languages? Maybe not. A low quant might hurt your funding chances at some universities that have a flawed funding system based on arbitrary score minimums, but at most schools, your quant will not matter in the least. Good luck on your test!

I mean you’re doing Islamic studies so they will look at your verbal and writing much more than math. Especially you are able to speak 5 languages, I think this will outshine your low quantitative score which nobody cares about anyway since it is not related to Islamic studies. If you do get 700ish on your verbal, then you’re good.

You should devote some time to studying for the quantitative section. Just for the sake of not looking like both foolish and lazy.

thank you all so much for your replies!
