I have always wanted to attend columbia ever since I was in junior high school. i have visited the school and it is heavenly. ok ill get to the point. Im afraid my SAT scores will hurt my chances severely. I have a 630 in CR, 750 in M, and 730 in WR (combined 2110). I have also received a 720 in physics and 770 in math 2.

I have seen people with 2300+ rejected and I am really afiraid my dream wont come true. Will those scores kill me?

CR is a little low, but I don’t think those scores will kill you. They definitely won’t help, but they won’t write you off entirely from a 2100 sat score. Columbia is much less score based versus some of the other ivies.

I definitely know people at Columbia (and other ivy league schools) with scores worse than that. Also, your good scores in math and science and comparatively weak scores in english just show that you’re better at one area and not as great (but still good) at another. Columbia understands that, and not every student needs to be a genius in all areas of school (just competent in all and excellent in a few), especially if the area of study you emphasize in your app correlates with the subjects in which you have done best in high school, in standardized testing, etc. So, no, your SAT scores will not kill your dream. Don’t worry. Also, not to be rude, but if you have a dream in life than can be killed by a few numbers on a piece of paper, you might want a dream of somewhat hardier or more robust stock. :)

I think once you pass the “prerequisite” regarding standardized scores, colleges truly look at other parts of your app. I know a good friend (ASIAN male) who got into Stanford EA with a 630 critical reading (2210 composite) even though critical reading is “the most important” part of the SAT according to college confidential. How? He made his app. truly outstanding (national champion in math, state champion in viola, ASB president, etc. etc.) with amazing letters of recommendations and such.

What do I feel is the “prerequisite” score for Columbia?
Personally, for an asian male, I think one should strive for at least a 2150, or a 2200. But once you pass that, CONTRARY to college confidential beliefs, I feel that a 2200 can get in just as easily as a 2350 can.

^jelecrois: Hooked applicants are a whole different story. I feel that for URM’s (african-americans) and regards to SAT’s, you can subtract about 200-300 points. As in the prerequisite for a URM would probably be a 1950 ish, and then if he/she has a stellar application then he/she has a great shot.

For recruited athletes and the other hooked applicants you speak of, it seems to vary a LOT more. I’ve seen recruited athletes with about 1600 get accepted and some with higher scores get rejected. I guess it’s a matter of how much of a “pull” the coach has for you.

No, it’s not too low, I’m an international (asian) student with a combined of 2190 and I have gotten in ED. I find that it’s not about the SAT scores, if you get it over 2100+ it’s all adequate. Just try to find some hook about you that makes you stand out. For me it was about singing and choirs.

Well other than grades, I do have a passion for medicine and have volunteered at a local hospital. I have also done volunteering back in India for summer vacations (both related to medicine). My intended major is biochemistry.

The only hooks I supposedly have are: first generation, Indian?
oh and does a low family income count as a hook?
