Will this affect how colleges look at me?

Hi! So I’m an upcoming junior and I’m going to be taking:

Band, AP Stats, AP Phys 1, AP Chem, APUSH, AP Lang/Comp, and a study hall.

I originally wanted to take Honors French 3, but in the past few years, the french teachers at my school just disappear after each year so not many people take it. The counselors told me that it wouldn’t be able to fit in my schedule due to the amount of AP classes I have, and I’m just worried at how the study hall will look to colleges!

Will they see me as lazy or “not taking advantage of school resources”?

Also does 2 years of languages look bad? I’m not really sure what to do, since I don’t really like the idea of starting afresh with a new language, and I’m not really sure what I should be doing in the language department!

Thanks guys!

Don’t worry about it - in college admissions the counselor can explain the situation. Just double check with them, and they should be happy to write about it.

Also, ideally, you should have at least 4 levels wort of a class, so if you can take it senior year - do that. If not, then perhaps self study it if you really want to. It’s not your fault the school doesn’t offer it.

So, 2 separate questions.

With 5 AP classes, a study hall is probably justified. If other students who are targeting the same schools as you are taking 6 courses, then you will not be judged as “lazy.”

The question of 2 years of French depends upon the colleges targeted. If they only require 2 years of a foreign language, you’re fine; if they request 3+, you’re not. The schedule conflict cannot be used as an excuse because you are choosing not to resolve the conflict.

The school does offer it; he is choosing not to take it.

Oh okay thanks! Also @skieurope, do you think it would be better to take Spanish 1 this year or to wait until senior year to take French 3?

Edit: Never mind, I just checked the colleges I wanted to go to and the website said 3-4 years of 1 foreign language! I’ll most likely attempt to take it senior year again! Thanks everyone!

I would suggest not taking AP Phys and AP Chem at the same time…and take French instead. it is going to be so much easier to remember your french if you haven’t taken a year off.
Also have you taken calculus?

If you are finished with Calc BC and are a science super genius and plan to take AP Bio next year, then take french next year. Consider taking Multivariable Calc at your local CC as Dual Enrollment instead of AP stats.

If you have not taken calculus I would not take AP stats but continue with pre-calc or calc and only take one AP science and take french this year and another AP science next year. Nobody expects you to take all 3 AP science courses.

You might also consider taking French at a local college or CC.

@bopper It would be convenient to take off AP Chem for next year, but the issue mostly lies in my period 1 and 3 classes, Band is only offered 1st period and APUSH (offered periods 1 and 3) and Honors French 3 (only offered period 3) , so taking out a science wouldn’t do much :frowning: Also since I do have a study hall, I think I would be able to manage 2 science courses at the same time, since last year I took AP Bio and Honors Chem without a study hall. Thanks for the advice regardless!

@happy1 I did some googling in my area, and my local cc didn’t offer any online french courses, and I don’t think I would have the time to physically go to the college to take the class :frowning:

@DeadlyZeus have you taken calculus?

@bopper No, I took Honors Algebra 2 my freshman year and Honors Precalculus my sophomore year. My chem teacher told me it would be better to take stats then calculus junior year, since it would be hard to transition into a college and take calculus 2 with a year doing absolutely no calculus. O;
