Will this affect my friend's College Admissions?

College Admissions question?
Hello all,

I have a friend in New York who's in a bit of a dilemma. She failed the second semester of her high school classes as a junior due to an illness which caused her to miss most of the semester. Unfortunately the school didn't legitimize her illness and because of this, she has straight Fs on her second semester junior year report card and many unexcused absences. She's recently changed schools and is repeating the 11th grade this year. Needless to say, she's really worried about how this will effect her chances at college admissions; she's a really bright student and has taken straight Honors/APs her entire school career and has gotten pretty much straight As for both her Freshman/Soph years at her previous high school. This year she's enrolled in like 7 AP classes including AP Physics C and AP Calculus BC (she just took EPGY pre-calc and calc A over the summer), is an editor for her school newspaper, and has entered a whole bunch of writing competitions and is planning on attending internships and entering other ECs

My intuition's telling me that she should have no trouble, but I wanted to hear some advice from more experienced academics. I'm sure she'll be able to get doctors notes/etc validating her absences if she needs to. Keep in mind she's looking at top colleges such as the ivy leagues, Stanford, UC Berkeley, U Chicago, etc. She's really talented; hopefully the system won't keep her down

Thanks for your help

make sure she explains it. Although why didnt the school accept the illness? that is weird

Seems like there has to be a lot more to this story than the “school not legitimizing her illness”…

Make sure she explains it somewhere in her application. Maybe even get some teachers to mention it in recommendation letters. That’ll build a strong case for her. Also, if they see how she did before and after this illness, that helps too.
Oh, maybe even get an interview at the colleges?
