First trimester junior year, I had a RIDICULOUSLY hard math teacher. I tried SO hard in that class, learned everything, but still only got a B-.

So I retook it. I'm good at math, retook Honors Precalc A with a different teacher and received a solid A. I then took the second term, Honors Precalc B, with this teacher and also received an A.

In terms of GPA, this just translates to an unweighted 4.0 in this course. But I'm wondering if, junior year, this looks bad to have received an B- in the first place. I'm hoping it's looked at in a positive light, and makes me seem determined. What do you guys think AdComs will think?

I love math, I want to major in engineering, I got a 35 ACT (36 Math subscore), I tutor high-level math at Kumon. This teacher is known for being literally nuts, getting in trouble with the administration, and the only reason he's not out of work is because of his ten-year.

Bump! Come on guys!

I think you mean tenure, but ok. I honestly think it looks worse that you were so caught up in one B- that you had to retake the class. Accept it, move on. One grade in one class probably won’t make or break your case.

Trust me, I have many more than just “one” B on my transcript, thanks to my freshman year. I’m worried this will look bad for engineering school…

Most colleges don’t look at freshmen year(Princeton and other ivies I know do not) so don’t get too preoccupied about that. But flying is right, it does look bad to retake a class when you could have taken another- possibly harder- class. It was a B- not a C- or D-.

My personal opinion is that they might frown upon it, but at the same time they will see that you are a determined student.

Do you really think they’ll frown upon it because of that!? That I’m OCD?

I’m really not; I have a life. I just didn’t want it to impact my GPA! And my school has trimesters, which are more difficult/ force you to take more classes than semesters. The only class it replaced would’ve been an elective…it’s not like I was going to take Multivariable Calc A at a community college in the middle of my Honors Precalc sequence! Why would I take a harder course?

Calm down. I didn’t say that, they will frown upon it because you retook a class when you didn’t do too poorly. They could care less about you being OCD, which I doubt you are because you said you had plenty of Bs from freshmen year.

It’s better to take a different class(harder to show colleges that you can still excel in the subject, and that this one grade doesn’t represent your abilities) then taking the same one JUST to improve your GPA. Colleges rather you have a lower GPA and take harder, new classes.

That’s what I’m saying. I thought the reason they’d frown upon it would be that I did poorly (B- is poor for the schools I want to go to), not because they’d consider it OCD (which you’re saying is the case)!

And why would/how could I take a harder class in the middle of my math sequence?! Like I said, one can’t exactly take Calc 3 in the middle of an Honors Precalc sequence. The only class it replaced was Painting.
