Will This Be an Immediate Red Flag?! Please Help.

I founded a business while in high school. One of which, though, I stopped working at. This business, however, continued to thrive for another year before dying out. On my application, I am going to put how much money we made from the business while I was there, but the problem is, when the other business owners put down how much money the company made, it will be a different amount, since they were working there a year after I had left. Would this apparent inconsistency cause a red flag if we end up applying to similar colleges and admission officers see different numbers? And will they want to check our financial records even though we were a private business?

It is unlikely that you will be even applying to the same colleges. That being said, you will list the years involved which would be clearly different, so it won’t be an issue.

We will actually be applying to some of the same colleges, since were in the same town and applying for similar majors in similar geographic areas. But all that aside, what if they don’t put the years on theirs? I just don’t want to get rejected because of a discrepancy.

You’ll be fine–put as much info down as you feel necessary and that will ensure that your figure won’t be disputed. Don’t sweat this one! If you’re still nervous about it, email the admissions office, most of them are very happy to assist you in things like this.

Thanks @adscam14! That made me feel better.

Assuming you use a fairly traditional way of listing your activities (especially with the Common App) you have to list the years. I have never seen an application that did not require you list the years of involvement in ECs.

Okay, thanks @artsygirl!
