So, i'll be taking a total of 5 AP's next year. I had originally wanted to take less, but a lot of my fellow freshman are also taking 5 AP's, so I need to keep up with them. In retrospect, our class is perhaps the most competitive class, because I dont recall any of the upperclassmen having to take so many AP'S 10th grade...

So my schedule is going to be:
AP US Gov
AP Lang
AP Psych
AP Calc AB (you have to take AB before BC in my school)
AP Bio
Spanish 3
Health 2 (required)
Basketball (PE required)

AP Gov and Psych are easy.
Are you good at math? If so, same goes for AP Calc AB
AP Bio… it really depends on your teacher, but generally it’s memorization. Lots and lots of it.
Not sure about lang though.

You say you ‘have to’ to keep up which may be a problem. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for academic competition, but you have to take classes that you are interested in, otherwise you will either be bored or will realize you have bitten off more than you can chew and cause irreparable damage to your GPA, not to mention the stress.
Second, you ask if it’s “too much” and that we cannot answer because we don’t know you as a student. When I was a sophomore I took 3 (Chem, Physics, Euro) and it was big adjustment going from honors to AP, so I am glad I didn’t take more. The classes you have signed up for are a bit easier.
AP US Gov - Half year course at my school, so should be fairly easy for an entire year.
AP Lang - Depends on your teacher/ your writing ability.
AP Psych - Easy
AP Calc AB- I am strong in math, so I found it easy but, again, depends on you.
AP Bio- Time consuming

Personally, I would say this isn’t so much, but you have to be ready to work hard (not just honors classes anymore!) Think about whether you WANT to be in so many APs or if you’re just doing it because everyone else is; if the latter, it may be better to excel at fewer classes, which you like, rather than be miserable in many.

What will you take your other years? Junior year is critical for grades and senior year rigor.

Thanks to everyone that replied!

Marine & Metrical: so from what I got, Gov and Psych should be fairly easy. And I’d say that math is my strongest area, so Calculus shouldn’t be TOO bad. I guess that I will think about Lang and Bio, because it seems like it would be the most time consuming. And although I understand that I don’t “need to” keep up with my peers (about 15 that are taking the same classes), the high school I go to is at most average. There’s about 500-600 people per class, with only 3-5 people getting into an ivy-league caliber school a year. Thus, I feel like I “need to” or else won’t get into a top tier college.

Lacrossemom: I’m thinking about 4-5 more AP’s Junior and Senior year, all taken at school. My school has a fairly large scope of AP’s to choose from. For Junior year, I’m thinking about Calc BC, Physics, World History, Lit, Computer Science. Senior year, probably Chem, Econ, Euro, Enviro, Stats

If I may make a suggestion: given that 15 people will all have schedules as great as yours and perhaps even the grades to go with them, it will be your extracurriculars and strengths in other areas that set you apart. I know you asked about your schedule, so I don’t want to digress too much. I just want to remind you that if you plan on an ivy league school, you should plan to have some solid ECs sophomore year and sick to them! Your junior and senior year schedule plans seem good, as long as you are constantly challenging yourself.

Lang is an easy test, but the workload varies significantly. Same goes for Bio.
Psych and AB are really easy classes.
Don’t know about Gov. It’s usually easy.
What kind of school requires AB before BC? I somewhat regret not taking BC, they’re essentially the same thing but BC has like 1 more unit

Go for it. Take the 5 APs, since your school actually makes it possible.

Also, how can you take Lang in sophomore year, and Lit in junior year? Isn’t it usually Lang junior year Lit senior year?

Metrical: Thanks! I have about 4 extracurricular activities (clubs and sports) that i’m doing. I’m also looking into volunteering at a hospital or shadowing a doctor over the summer for work experience. Next summer, I’m planning on taking an organic chemistry course at a near community college.

bobtheboy: Yah, I’m pretty glad that my school has so many AP’s. I’ve read on CC so many high schools that limit the student’s choices. I disagree with the school forcing students to take AB before BC, but I’m not complaining too much. An extra weighted math class right? haha As for Lit and Lang, our school has people generally do Lang before Lit.

Impressive. Good luck to you. I do agree that you also need to pay attention to your EC list and ensure it allows you opportunities for leadership positions.

How are you doing AP Lang in sophomore year? What happened to English 2?

Your schedule is kind of similar to mine. For sophomore year I plan to take:

AP World History
AP Statistics
AP Biology
AP Calculus AB (online)
AP Environmental Science (online or self-study)
Spanish 3
Health Science 2
Chemistry Honors
English 2 Honors

My EC are Debate, HOSA, Key Club, and possibly Track and Field.
