Math SAT 800: How To Master the Toughest Problems

bump ( I really want to know)

Is that a Barron’s book?

I purchased the Barron’s book called SAT 2400 for my son. It contains only the very hardest problems in each category (reading, writing, and math).

Naturally, since I bought the book, I thought it would be useful to him. It’s designed to teach you about only the most challenging problems in each category so that you can ace the SAT. Well, he didn’t think the book was necessary. He tends to ace things on his own. He hardly used it. I’d say he spent about 2 hours total in the book, over several months time. And, as it turned out, he missed only one question on the SAT, out of all sections combined. So I guess he was right.

In sum, the book was not really useful to him. He aces things without studying and he didn’t have the drive to practice only the hardest possible problems, given that the SAT was likely to contain very few problems at that level. I was smart at his age but not as over-the-top smart as he is, so I think a book like that would have been useful to me. I would have learned all I could about those really challenging problems in order to maximize my chances of acing the test. I was a different kind of student than him, though. It would have been worth the time to me, even if it meant I got just one more right.

So I guess it depends on what kind of student you are. If the book you’re considering is a Barron’s book, I would guess it’s similar to our book. You may well find it useful if you have the drive to devour every detail and if you’ve already mastered all but the most challenging problems. Otherwise, your money might be better spent on a more general study guide covering all levels of difficulty.

I hope that helps!

I just read your other post, Dr. P. It said that you were looking to test yourself on just the hardest problems in math. In that case, if the book you’re looking at for Math is a Barron’s book (simply because I can’t speak of any other brands for math), then I would think it would be excellent for what you need. My son’s Barron’s book called SAT 2400: Aiming for the Perfect Score would be excellent for your purposes – except that it contains all three areas of the test, not just math.

Thanks for you replies guys but it seems I wasn’t clear so I will rephrase my question: Is this book USEFUL FOR SAT MATH SUBJECT TESTS (MATH I AND/OR II?)?

NOTE: I will not use it for the SAT Reasoning math section, just for subject tests.
