I want to go to Carnegie Melon and my cousin went there. Is that a Legacy? Also what kind of GPA, SATs, ECs, etc. do I need to get in?

I don’t think that’s legacy. I may be wrong.

For Carnegie Mellon, you probably need an UW GPA of at least a 3.6-3.7, and an SAT around 2100.

aww well. will it help me even the slightest though or do they just look over it because on college board it says that Alumni relation is an important factor. also what kind of class rank do i need? Im guessing top tenth

I guess mentioning it doesn’t hurt.

You’ll find that even though it’s important, it’s equal with almost everything else EXCEPT class rigor, rank, GPA and test scores which are VERY important. http://www.cmu.edu/ira/CDS/pdf/cds_2010_11/c_firstyear_admission.pdf The only things which don’t count are geography, state and religion. Alumni relation would get about the same weight as first gen, ethnic status and level of interest. And I don’t think a cousin counts.

if my parents went to college in Bangladesh (my dad did a residency in Texas Tech however) and my sister went to UGA, does that not make me first gen. Also will me being in orchestra help me in talent/ability even though i only did it for two years but was in the second highest orchestra?Sorry if im asking too many questions.

Schools define “legacy” differently but most schools just consider parents or siblings as legacy. Some include grandparents. I’ve never heard of any school that considers cousins but you never know.

OP, You are not first gen. Your parents went to college.
