Im a 4.0 student who got really sick this semester, Ive had pnemonia three times and my grades are being wrecked because of it. Essentially I see myself trading my 4.0 for a semester of bs and cs. Now If I withdraw, ill have four W's on my transcript, and retake all the classes next semester. However two of these w's are NON-UC transferable classes. So I need advice on how to proceed.

nice, misspelled Berkeley. woops.

Drop out. Health is more important.

“berekely?”

Personally, I would take the W’s, but I’m not sure that’s the best decision. Intuitively, it seems to be the best decision. I’d be more likely to believe you if your transcript showed W’s, as opposed to B’s and C’s.

“berekely?” lol, i got you on a technicality

You can clear your W’s if you have health reasons & doc note. So if you really can’t raise your grades, take the semester off.

Take the W’s and get healthy man =/.
Best of luck to you.

What do you mean I can clear W’s, I have never heard of that?

I’ve never heard of that either, what the heck. If we can do that, then we all will have a merry christmas.

Why is everyone advocating that he/she drop out? With a 4.0, he/she has a great chance getting accepted to Cal. You can still have a 3.0+ with B’s/C’s, as long as you work to make sure that you maintain the 3.0+. Aside from that, as long as you maintain the 3.0+ Berkeley isn’t going to care about a semester of lower grades, you’ll already be accepted. Your GPA starts over once you’re attending a UC.

Here’s a GPA calculator so you can determine whether you can maintain a 3.0+:

[Transfer Center: GPA Calculator - Transfer Center - Ohlone College, Fremont, Newark, East Bay Area, California](Transfer Center: GPA Calculator | Transfer Center - Ohlone College, Fremont and Newark, California)

Best of luck and get well soon!

Worst advice I’ve ever heard ^

People do not simply waltz into Berkeley with 3.0’s.

Secondly, what if this person has plans of graduate school? Law school or medical school? They’ll need to keep that 4.0 as long as they can. You’re GPA does not simply “start over” once you get to a UC. Sure, at that specific campus it does. But your overall GPA after graduation will be an aggregate of both junior college and university GPA’s. This is imperative to realize when applying for graduate school.

I think you should heed the advice of the other posters. Drop out for the semester. Having experienced health problems myself, I can assure you that being healthy trumps all. Like someone already said, having a 4.0 and then seeing an entire semester following with just “Ws” clearly indicates that something terribly wrong has happened, and the admissions officers will likely sympathize with you, and believe you- you’ll just obviously have to mention it during your application essays.

Don’t risk getting a C for something that isn’t your fault.

^
Being sick is a legit excuse for having bad grades.

If the TS can go to school without sacrificing his/her health, that would be okay. B’s and C’s + being terribly sick for some time during the semester is a “good” indicator that an individual has motivation, determination, and perseverance.

well, if you are still having pneumonia to this day I suggest you drop though. Get well, and get your A’s next semester. Best of luck.

If you stay in school the stress to just maintain Bs/Cs may keep you from recovering. Why do you even care about the 2 non-UC transferable classes? If your transcript shows straight As and then 1 semester of 4 Ws, it would be obvious that something legitimate happened and the Ws would not keep you from being accepted. Not that Ws matter that much anyway…

I’m sorry to hear about you getting sick, my friend.

But if everything is how I understand, it seems like you still have a good chance at Berkeley so long as you successfully communicate why exactly your grades fell. If worst comes to worst, you could always stay another year. :)

EDIT: jnewaz, I sent you a PM.

If you have a 4.0 and want to keep it a 4.0, then go ahead.

I think the advice here falls between wreckless and anal. The risk of your 4.0 dropping to say, a 3.8 and zomg NEVER getting a 4.0 again may be too much for some people.

If you have 1 semester with “horrible” grades and then the rest (even at UC) are 4.0, the graduate school will NOT be denying you.

FFS.

You could always drop the non-essential classes and state that your sickness put you in a situation where you wanted to remain dedicated to your subjects or something.

Either way, good luck!

Take the W’s. W’s do not hurt your GPA ;)

thank you everyone for your advice,

after much consideration i decided to drop the classes, my reasoning was in line with one of the replies on this thread, that is, since i have had great grades for all prior (and hopefully future) semesters, one semester of straight w’s will obviously be a sign of a personal emergency.

again, thank you for all the replies.

What don’t you guys get? Jnewaz, did you apply already? If you did, finish your semester.

Here’s why: When you get accepted as a transfer, you’re given a provisional contract where as long as you maintain a 3.0 overall GPA and finish the classes you reported, you’re accepted.

If you’ve had a 4.0 three straight semesters, then one semester of a 2.8 will not bring you down to a 3.0 or less.

The ONLY way they rescind your application is if you drop BELOW a 3.0 overall. They can’t just change their mind and go, “Well he got 4.0’s before but then a 2.8? No way, he’s not good enough for us.”

However, if you did NOT apply, take the W’s, give doctor’s notices to your admissions department and ask for a re-evaluation to erase your record.
