Hi, so, basically, I've been somewhat of a strong student throughout high school. However, I hit a rough patch Sophomore year in Algebra II Honors, and I received a grade of D third quarter, and a F fourth quarter, leaving me with a C- on my transcript.

On my transcript, I've taken only Honors and AP courses, and of the fourteen finalized scores on my transcript itself (as of right now), 11 are A/A+'s, 2 are B's, and one is the C- from last year. This year, I'm going to receive 3 more As and 3 more A+s, with two of the A+s in AP courses.

So essentially, by the time I apply to college, I will have finalized on my transcript, 20 grades

17 A/A+s
2 B's
1 C-

My GPA as of right now is a 3.7 unweighted, and I'm in the top 3% of my graduating class. However, the C- haunts me. Will it destroy my chances of getting into a good school? I'm not looking at Harvard or anything, just like, Boston University, Northeastern, Simmons, etc.

Have you produced evidence of getting past your rough patch in Algebra II, like retaking the class with a better grade, scoring high on SAT Math II, or meeting some other challenge that requires algebraic proficiency?

@Halogen - I have not, the most I’ve done is really just done is volunteer tutoring Algebra to middle schoolers, and I excelled at Pre-Cal and have enrolled in AP Calculus as a Senior.

If you give up on math after Algebra II and then score low on the math section of whichever standardized test you take, that shows you’ve failed at math which is a big deal.

But you didn’t do that; you moved onto success both in a subject that builds on Algebra II and in teaching the subject in one form or another. Keep it up in calculus and tutoring if you continue to tutor, score high on a standardized test that tests Algebra II material, and you’ll be fine.

You NEED to take the SAT Math Level II, and then you should be fine because colleges will see that it is a fluke. Your academic record is otherwise impeccable; thus, 1 bad grade should not ruin you for admissions.

@Recede - I had a 93 average in Geometry Honors Freshman Year, and a 93 right now in Trig/Pre Cal Honors. I haven’t gotten my SAT results back yet.

@msltennis97 - If I don’t take Level II SAT II in Math, will colleges refuse to look over my C?
