i met with an alumni from wake a couple months ago for lunch who is like the head or something of the alumni in the area. he agreed to write me a letter of recommendation. how much will that help me in the application process?

It can't hurt. If it's substantive, go ahead. If you've already submitted a lot, hold off on it. Now that I think about it, don't bother. Decisions will be out in about a week or so, and chances are that they have already made up their mind. If you get waitlisted, on the other hand, go ahead and send it in.
