Will This Hurt Me Or Make Me Stronger?

Hello, I would like to know how much money do you think I will receive? I live in New York State and I would like to attend Tennessee State University, my mothers income is $6,023 for the total year, that is my total income. How much aid do you think I will receive seeing that I want to go to an out of state school. How much do you think I will have to pay out of my pocket towards tuition?

I actually think you would have a MUCH better chance at coming through college without crushing debts at a private school, as they are known for being more generous with aid.

Are you white? If so, then you're a minority at TSU. This might help you with a better financial aid package if the admissions dept wants to attract you...

Are you a junior? If so, you might want to consider UT Knoxville as well. I believe (not certain, you could research) that they're somewhat more free with their financial aid. Knoxville isn't that much smaller than Nashville, especially the east side around Paper Mill Road.

But, you can always take out loans..it's manageable!

Your EFC will likely be 0 (unless you have a bunch of $$ in the bank). An out of state public school may not be the best choice, financially, though, since they tend to reserve financial aid for in-state applicants.

TSU is reasonably priced, at about 21K for out-of-state students (tuition, fees, room, board, books, and misc). While they average 85% of need, most of that aid is in the form of loans. And being out-of-state, you'll likely receive more loans and less grant money than an in-state student.

Here are the stats:

Financial Aid Statistics

* Full-time freshman enrollment: 1,157
* Number who applied for need-based aid: 755
* Number who were judged to have need: 668
* Number who were offered aid: 655
* Number who had full need met: 47

 • Average percent of need met: 85%
 • Average financial aid package: $5,957
 • Average need-based loan: $397
 • Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $899
 • Average non-need based aid: $8,412
 • Average indebtedness at graduation: $20,737

Financial Aid Distribution
Percent of total undergraduate aid awarded as:

* Scholarships / grants: 29%
* Loans / jobs: 71%

If your grades and stats are good, don't overlook some of the private schools, or your State schools.

You are very high need student. Lots of it depends on your stats. If your stats are good/ much above average/ your best bet will be private instate school which is known for good need/ merit based aid. If your stats are not that great look into public instate schools.
OOS public school is good option only if you have
1) some outstanding stats that school will want and be ready to pay
2) have some hook as adding to school geographic diversity, URM, etc.
3) do not have financial need
