i was wondering if a grade of pass looks bad on a transcript and if it adversely effects your gpa? I was just wondering because im looking to transfer to haas and according to there website and assist you can take the breadth req. as pass/no pass.

it doesn’t count toward your gpa only your unit count…

the admission advisers I’ve spoken to at Cal say that it’s unwise to take any breadth and IGETC classes p/np. haas is more competitive than most (b/c most applicants don’t complete the prereqs) so I would assume that they would prefer you take all the breadth classes with a letter grade.

One thing I realized after I got into Cal was that if you have a specific question regarding applications or admissions you can just call the department that would handle your inquiry and ask to speak to an adviser. In your case you could call haas admissions and ask them directly.

best of luck

it obviously won’t look good

ya but would it be better then getting a c or even a b.

^^if u take the breadth requirements, they’re just going to assume u got a C. FYI, of the 400 or so qualified applicants every year, about 75% of them have a 4.0 (i called the # on their site and that’s what the girl told me). so you would have no chance at all if u took the breadth for p/np as opposed to the other applicants who got A’s in all of em. if u have a few P/NP on ur transcripts it doesnt really matter if ur using them to get 60 units, but if u use them for breadth u would be at a serious disadvantage than others who get As on them.

i agree with the post above …taking a class p/np that is more than 2 units shows a general lack of motivation, if you plan on getting accepted to haas, you need to look **more **competitive than the other applicants not less

woah, 75%!!! that’s insane…ugh, i dont feel too good about my chances now that i know having a 4.0 doesn’t help but instead is “normal”…

^^well that’s what the girl said…i think she was some student volunteer or something b/c i’m pretty sure it’s not THAT high, considering that the average GPA of those ACCEPTED is 3.88.

I don’t think it would be that bad to take one breadth class for p/np. How many units are you taking? If you are taking a heavy load of classes, taking one for a p would be understandable. Also, if you have a high GPA, it makes sense that you’d want to protect it–and it will look less likely that you’re hiding a terrible grade.

For e.g., if you have a 4.0 and only one P grade, then it seems unlikely you couldn’t have done well in that one class. You just had other priorities, like classes more-related to your future education and career.

Just make sure that Haas doesn’t say you HAVE to take that particular class for a grade, if it is related to your future subject area. If the class is somehow related to business, I’d try to take the class for a grade, if it’s not too late.

I don’t know about Haas, but you can get into Cal after taking a breadth class for P with a strong GPA and challenging course loads.

alright i was just curious.btw im taking 19units which i would say is a decent load considering this is my first semester
