Will this open up more options for me?

I’ve been stuck debating if I should to Bama or Indiana(not a direct admit) for business. I’m starting to contemplate going to community college for a year because i’m so unsure of where to go. If I was to maintain lets say a 3.8-4.0 my first year at CC (easier said then done) would that open up more options of where I can transfer too? I was accepted to schools like West Chester, Bama, Indiana, FAU. I’ll probably finish school with a 3.2W (slacked off senior year) and 1170 new SAT. What kind of schools would I be looking at if I took the CC path?

A 3.8-4.0 would definitely open up some good options. However, it’s harder for transfers to get a comprehensive aid package. What about going to Bama for a year and then transferring? Business majors all take the same basic core curriculum. Micro + Macro econ, Fin + Mgmt Accounting, Calculus, and then a bunch of GE

I just feel if I go to Bama for one year I might as well finish my education there. I don’t think my parents would like the idea of me going that far with the intent to transfer out.

How much can your parents afford per year?

My parents said cost was not an issue for Bama or IU which cost around 45k a year so probably somewhere around that.

Well if you actually get a 3.8 - that will open up pretty generous scholarships at schools such as Seattle U, Hofstra, Suffolk, Adelphi, UW-Bothell. Enough to probably bring your CoA to around 45k.

Are there any more prestigious universities you have your eyes on?

Im guessing schools such as Michigan, Boston U, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, or Georgetown would all be too high of a reach? I have no idea how competitive transfer admissions are and how much HS stats come into play. I realize some of these schools are > 45K but a year or two at CC would allow that.

If you want to look at transfer admission acceptance rates what you have to do is go to google and type in " University name Common Data Set"

https://www.bu.edu/oir/cds/ is the one for BU for example.

Then you can go to D. Transfers and it will show you how many people applied, how many people got in, and also what is important for transfer admissions.

Thank you for all the help. I’ll look into that as I think about what I want to do.

It is age old question of what is better – “one in the hand or two in the bush”. If you are in the b-school at UA you have a very solid (although not top tier) option. The CC route may or may not land you better, affordable choices…keep in mind that merit aid is hard to come by for a transfer student.

If you know you want to go to a 4 year school and you know what you want to major in and your choice is between to big state schools or a CC, I would say it would be better to flip a coin for the Univ’s rather than go to CC.
