I got a 710 on the us history subject test -- twice. The first time I went in with zero studying but answered/guessed every question. The second time I studied, but skipped 6 questions I wasn't sure about.

My other subject test (lit) is a 780, and my actual SAT score is 2240.

Should I retake the us history test AGAIN? Would getting a higher score play a large weight in deciding acceptance or rejection? I understand that ECs, essays, and recs bear most of the significance in admissions decisions, so just based on test scores, how important are subject tests? Thank you!

First, one Subject Test score (especially one over 700) isn’t going to get you in or keep you out of any school. Your test scores will be put into context by admissions officers we don’t know and within your overall application that we haven’t seen, so nobody here can tell you how that score will be interpreted by admissions officers. Many people here say, “Oh, you HAVE to have SAT II’s over 750.” That’s simply not true. There are thousands of students at top universities right now with SAT IIs under 700, and I would guess that the huge majority of students at top schools had at least one score under 750.

My son (current Ivy student) also had a 710 on US History (and only a 4 on the AP US exam). I wouldn’t take it again. If you are concerned that your scores are borderline for schools you are applying to, you could perhaps shore them up by taking a third subject test in an area of strength. But I definitely would not retake an SAT II (especially a third time) that you scored over 700 on.
