I was thinking about writing about my job in the Commonapp short answer (you know, the one about EC or work). I live in Germany and work at a restaurant in Europe's biggest sauna, the Therme Erding. And I serve drinks to naked people, because the restaurant is in the clothing-optional section. (I do wear clothes, in case you were wondering. that seems to be the first question everybody asks when I tell them where I work) On the one hand I think it would be good to show just how different the environment is that I live in, because it's really no big deal in germany, but on the other hand I'm afraid it will be... how should I put this... "too much" for the colleges and that they might think I'm weird or sth... ^^

what do you think? can i write about that?

the colleges i'm applying to are harvard, tufts, northeastern, bu and simmons

Depends on how you focus on the issue in your essay. The assumption you’ve already made is that it’s somehow different. I think it’s a great topic for the diversity question of the common ap-- it shows you’ve been exposed to a different cultural/societal norm. What you learned from it is tolerance and respect for others’ lifestyle choices.
Need to have some humor somewhere.
Ask yourself if the same essay could be written with someone writing about how they are an alter-boy-- and the reply is sure.

I guess it’s an essay about settings-- did you learn anything from this experience beyond what you need to do to increase your tips?

Of all the topics that you can choose, why this one? Perhaps you’re joking.

The point of the essay (at least for the very selective colleges on your list) is to demonstrate through words and examples your academic and intellectual curiosity, how you would contribute to the enrichment of your peers, and how you would benefit and grow from the academic richness provided by the college.

At best this is a high risk essay topic. Perhaps it will add levity to a dull day in the admissions review of a multitude of applicants. Perhaps not.

Perhaps it would help if you READ what I wrote. I’m not going to write my essay about this. I was going to use this for the SHORT ANSWER, where you are supposed to briefly describe one of you ECs or work experiences.

I think it’s a great idea! The job is definitely interesting - don’t worry, the admission officers will understand that you’ve been exposed to a different culture with different customs. Wording is key though, don’t stress too much on the naked-ness or oh-I’m-so-unusual-and-special or they might think you’re trying to force it. Focus mainly on what you did, what you learned from it, why it was rewarding, etc. and it should be fine. I personally think it will help you stand out from the crowd Good luck!
