Will this schedule hurt my admission to McCombs School of Business @ UT Austin?

I took an AP Release class (first period release) my Junior year.

However, I had 6 AP classes that were also on my schedule.

Next year, I will be a Senior. At the moment, I only have 1 release (seventh period release), but I’m considering dropping my Special Education helping class (helping the disabled) and getting another release period. Thus, in total, I would have 2 release periods (first and second period release) and get to class/school at 10:12 AM.

My schedule will be:

FIRST PERIOD RELEASE (SENIOR RELEASE)
SECOND PERIOD RELEASE (AP RELEASE)
AP ENGLISH 4 GT
AP EUROPEAN HISTORY
AP MACROECONOMICS (first semester) / AP GOVERNMENT (second semester)
AP CALCULUS BC
AP STATISTICS

Will this hurt my chances of getting into McCombs?

Thanks.

No

It’s fine.

@eugenehan7 Class rank and rigor of secondary school record are the two most important things considered by UT for admissions decisions. I don’t know your class rank, but your schedule seems fine. Good luck.

I agree that if your stats and class rank are high enough - top 3% of graduating class, then it probably won’t matter. However, if you are borderline and they start to compare your EC’s against an equally academically strong candidate that has used free time wisely - to work at a part-time job, to assist the disabled, to march in the band, to act in theater, debate, whatever, then they are going to choose candidate B over you. I have never heard of " AP Release". I suppose the idea is that you have more time to study for your AP classes. In reality, without sharing more about what you plan to do with all your free time, it appears that you already have “senioritis” and will be sleeping in until 10 AM every day.

Jeez, give this kid a break. That schedule is pretty brutal. I took 5 AP courses last year (self-studying for one test as well), and that was painful. If I could’ve woken up at 10AM every day, I would’ve. Assuming you keep your grades up, you’ll definitely be more than ok getting into McCombs. After stalking your other post, your overall stats seem great! Only thing I would do is try to up the SAT score a little more if you want to have a SUPER good shot of getting in. Good luck and hope to see you on campus next year

I forgot to mention! I will have a part-time job at Hard 8 BBQ (working weekends) and will be volunteering at DFW Airport as well. @lots2do do you think it’ll still look pretty lazy / senioritis-y? I’m so sorry for being so annoying. I just need to make a schedule change before school starts and I need to be certain that I want two releases! Also, McCombs is my dream school.

Based on your current stats, strength of schedule, strength of high school, I think you are fine. Last year was an exceptionally competitive applicant pool for McCombs. If you do well on your AP Calc AB, BC tests and your ECON AP test you will be in really good shape as those are all first year requirements freshman year at McCombs. TAKE the AP credit if you earn it. Calculus at UT can be brutal.

If there was something you wanted to focus on strengthening - I would say consider leadership positions. Maybe you will have some leadership responsibilities at the BBQ place or at your Airport volunteer position.

And lastly, write really strong essays. Good luck!
